An openly gay bishop whose appointment split the Anglican church is to resign, saying the last seven years had "taken their toll" on him, his family and his flock.
The Right Rev Gene Robinson, of New Hampshire, revealed his plans yesterday, at at annual diocesan meeting. He will be 65 when he steps down, seven years below the retirement age.
He told the convention that being in the eye of the storm had proved too much.
He said: "Death threats, and the now-worldwide controversy surrounding your election of me as bishop, have been a constant strain, not just on me, but on my beloved husband, Mark, who has faithfully stood with me every minute of the last seven years, and in some ways, you.
"While I believe that these attitudes, mostly outside the diocese, have not distracted me from my service to you, I would be less than honest if I didn't say that they have certainly added a burden and certain anxiety to my episcopate."
He said he would continue his work with the "unchurched" and "dechurched" on college campuses and public forums, showing no intention of retiring from public life.

“... the last seven years had “taken their toll” on him ...”
His “work” as a destroyer of the church is done. Now he wants to head for the Keys and party down.
“He said: “Death threats, and the now-worldwide controversy surrounding your election of me as bishop”
I seriously doubt this.
As a life long Episcopalian for almost 50 years, I am now 66.
I doubt that any true member of the church would issue death threats, even if they have a visceral dislike for homosexuals.
Before I left the church, as a senior warden, I saw many phonies and gays flocking to the church.
The ECUSA has become the favorite home for gays, neo-Marxist, and whatever un-American and societal perversions.
The church just bent over for them....no pun intended.
Moving to Bangkok, perhaps?
Any "church" that would install as pastor, or as senior bishop, someone who is so overt about breaking God's laws (as outlined in pastoral qualifications listed in 1 and 2 Timothy) is already dead. But the church as the Body of Christ lives on. It is best for the faithful to do as Christ taught, to "cut out this sinful eye" or "cut off this sinful hand" and move on to a different church.
In Robinon’s eyes its always been about him, not the Dear Lord.
his beloved HUSBAND? Oh, egad. And of course, this is all about him. Very sick.
If he had been really concerned for his church he would have disqualified himself before ever taking the job and slunk off into oblivion where he belongs. What an embarrassment for the church, the state and any self respecting person of belief.
Yes, we were in the Episcopal Church too, as gays started flocking in. Not in our parish, but there were some. We ran for our lives. There is very little damage left to do in that church.
If you want to see most of the Obama and Coexist bumper stickers in my area all in one place, visit the parking lot later this morning of the little Episcopal church where my parents got married 64 years ago. My mother’s ancestors must be rolling in their graves.
His sexuality trumpted his vocation.
Why would this promotion to bishop take a toll on his family?
This ‘Bishop’ abandoned his wife and kids to take up with his gay lover. I think that had more to do with it.
Wow, just wow. He was an alcoholic when he caused all this disruption in the church, and could it be possible he now is saying, in code, that he's got AIDS?
In his statement there are:
67 instances of the word "I"
23 instances of the word "me"
26 instances of the word "my."
A perfect liberal narcissist if there ever was one.
Stupid old pervert should have started his own religion...not piggy-backing on an established Christian Church while ignoring the Ten Commandments and the tenets that have served mankind for centuries.
These narcissies create their own version of sins they can commit on earth without remorse - I would love to be in Heaven when they try to get in.
“Yes, we were in the Episcopal Church too, as gays started flocking in. Not in our parish, but there were some. We ran for our lives. There is very little damage left to do in that church.”
Yes, they have corrupted a once great church.
Somehow, gays and Marxist go together.
My parents would be rolling in their graves if they knew.
I am now living in the Philippines, where the Catholic church is king.
Recall that in the Book of Acts we are taught that evil people will enter the church and try to corrupt it from within. The fact that this particular "church" is collapsing is proof that the people who do care about the church are fulfilling God's Word.
So he’s just going to pack up?
