It is a rare thing to have an adults only party (I have never had one) but it is rather liberating to go to one because you can discuss adult matters freely and have lively discussions with out interruptions from children.

I would consider a card party an adults only party (particularly if wagers were being made).

I have been to parties where the children and adults basically had separate parties in the same house. The children were segregated to a room or basement away from the adults. This works fairly well. The children know the adults are not far away and therefore behave themselves.

The folks I interact with here are Việt Kiều and the traditions are different. Those discussions happen when several men get together in the parish hall or at the store one of them owns. The women do the same mostly in the nail shops, but any real cross family socializing is everybody. If the adults are playing cards the kids do separate themselves mostly and tend to be in the other room playing cards. We don't mix with card playing because the kids prefer rowdier games. Sometimes we play Chinese Chess and then the kids mix with the adults, usually because it is kids who are avid for it and who brought the chess sets. There is beer for the adults and always lots of food and very rarely does anyone actually progress beyond mildly tipsy.
