All U.S. Marines are gung-ho.  But, few can match the vision and total commitment of the famous 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune.  In 1921 he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921.

Gen. Lejeune's order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps.  It further directed that the order be read to all Marines on 10 November of each year to honor the founding of the Marine Corps.  Thereafter, 10 November became a unique day for U.S. Marines throughout the world.

-----

MARINE CORPS ORDERS
No. 47 (Series 1921)

HEADQUARTERS U.S. MARINE CORPS
Washington, November 1, 1921

759. The following will be read to the command on the 10th of November, 1921, and hereafter on the 10th of November of every year. Should the order not be received by the 10th of November, 1921, it will be read upon receipt.

(1) On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name "Marine". In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.

(2) The record of our corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and is the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.

(3) In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.

(4) This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the corps. With it we have also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps.

JOHN A. LEJEUNE,
Major General Commandant

Marines Corp Seal Plaque 1

He is on the range next week and I'm very anxious to hear his score.
How will you know - phone call, email, letter?
I hope you can make his graduation, it'll give you chills and bring a tear to your eye too.

Well, it will have to be by letter. Email? Marines? MCRD? Are you kidding? No. It will be by letter. We've only received three letters so far and the difference between the first and third was stark. He's growing up.

I hope you can make his graduation, it'll give you chills and bring a tear to your eye too.

Nothing on this earth could keep me from that. I still remember the speech the Colonel gave at the one I attended in 1978 - it made chills go up my spine. I don't remember my commencement speech from High School or graduation but I do remember that Recruit Graduation speech.

Semper Fi! Happy Birthday!

It is thanks to people like you and your son that we are able to enjoy the quality of life in this country that we do. Any words are sadly inadequate to compensate for your, and our country’s, loss. The best we can do is say thank God for people like you and your son.

Thank you for your service. Sounds like your Gunny was a complete stud. To have survived both of those actions is pretty amazing. And of course, the Chosin breakout is where the famous line “Retreat, hell! We’re just attacking in another direction,” came from, which is pretty much what they did. I will definitely check out that book.

One never knows these days. When I was there we used a series of cans and strings :>)
About 10 years ago I was on a USMC discussion thread and a woman was asking for prayers for her daughter who was trying to qualify for the third or fourth time at PI. If she failed she was out - which is as it should be.
The woman went on to say that she called the Colonel and asked if her daughter could wear an eye patch. She CALLED THE COLONEL?? Gheeze.
I responded by telling her to look at the Marine Corps Memorial in DC, and to tell me how many of those Marines were wearing eye patches. No reply.

One never knows these days.

I hear ya. One of the things that I had thought had a pretty strong tradition in the Marines was that after a recruit stands on the yellow footprints they are then ushered into the receiving building where there are banks of phones and in the middle of the night the recruit calls home to tell his family he arrived safely and here is my address, love you, bye. All the while you can hear the DI's screaming in the background at your beloved child.

That didn't happen. I didn't hear from my son for going on thirteen days and then it was just the form letter. Longest thirteen days of my life.

Semper Fi,

They call themselves greens because they're too yellow to admit they're reds.

Your tagline really puts it in black and white.
