The flag is taking the place of the “l”—not unusual for Google to substitute various items for letters on special days/holidays/anniversaries, etc.
Then the flag should be well above the logo so the “e” is completely visible. This is a very poorly created graphic. I don’t know about a crescent or scythe, but it does look hastily created as if Google was not aware of Veterans Day.
