Last week, this column featured a three part series critiquing "Guns, Democracy, and the Insurrectionist Idea," a book co-authored by Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (formerly the National Coalition to Ban Handguns). In putting that series together, I came across C-Span's footage of a 90 minute debate between Horwitz, on one side, and Professor Robert H. Churchill, author of the superb "To Shake Their Guns in the Tyrant's Face," on the other. The debate took place in June of last year, and watching it in its entirety would be a well-spent hour and a half, for anyone interested in the gun rights debate.
For those without the time for that, though, I would like to draw attention to a 40-second segment in which Horwitz seems to make a rather startling claim. First, though, a bit of background is in order.
Immediately before this segment of the debate, Professor Churchill had been discussing political violence--but not the kind Horwitz and his ideological allies like to discuss. Prof. Churchill was talking about the U.S. government's use of violence. He made the point, in fact, that the best way the government could have eased tensions with the militia movement in the 90's would have been to put FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi on trial. Horiuchi, you'll remember, shot and killed Vikci Weaver (unarmed--she was, in fact, holding her infant daughter) at Ruby Ridge, and was later at the Branch Davidian siege in Waco, where he might have done some more killing. In fact, Prof. Churchilll goes on to say that even better than putting Horiuchi on trial would have been to induce him to turn state's evidence against the Deputy Attorney General (you remember who that was, don't you?).

The left in general has gotten themselves into a sticky place w/ this sort of ‘thinking’. On one hand they protest state executions of convicted felons and death penalties. On the other they seem to have little (or no) problem w/ the police being judge, jury and executioner. It makes me wonder if there might be unspoken ulterior agendas. With the left its never as it seems is it?

Himmler and Goering used LOCAL police organizations in Bavaria and Prussia, infiltrating them with Gestapo and KRIPO agents, to finally form an overall police state network.
Those “Officer Friendly” types were just “doing their job” and “just following orders” too.
We’re a long way from simple “Peace Officers” now. They’re Law ENFORCEMENT!!!!!! (damnit!) Officers now, and you WILL obey.
And if you don’t instantly obey, well, they carry guns for a reason, don’t they...that unstated threat is always there.
Wasn’t Ruby Ridge under George HW Bush?
Yes, it was, and it was one of the failures of his administration, far worse than “read my lips.”
Before the Obama Administration, I think some of the American people had their heads in the sands concerning Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elian Gonzalez, etc. They didn’t want to believe that our government could actually be evil.
That seems to be changing now.
Well I hope people are learning that.

Yes. It was a sideshow of an ATF operation against a bunch called The Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord. Randy Weaver knew some of those guys and ATF wanted him to inform on them. Weaver said no. Bad move.
It was part of Poppy Bush's long-running antipathy for the Right. He always detested people like Rick Perry and other former Democrats (thought them all Kluxers -- hell, all white Southerners); and in people like the Covenanters, he saw something he really despised, so he decided to turn the dogs loose.
W/O hijacking the thread, Bush's peeve is really a continuation of the Civil War. People like the Covenanters, Constitutionalists, Christian Identity racist/rightists, are all descended from the old Jacksonian society that New England cookie-pushers have always hated and feared. Gettysburg was the rubber match, between Yankee kiss-my-ass society and Southern-led, trans-Appalachian society, which was Jacksonian (as in, Democracy in America).
The same creepy people keep showing over and over in the Dem regimes.
