Democrats to push for $250 Social Security payment

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- When House Democrats return to Washington on Monday, a top priority will be putting a $250 dollar check in the mail to 58 million Social Security recipients.

Democrats plan to vote early in the lame-duck session on a bill that would provide Social Security recipients with a one-time payment, according to the office of Earl Pomeroy, a Democrat from North Dakota who authored the legislation.

The bill -- with a total cost of roughly $14 billion -- is designed to make up for another year without an increase in Social Security benefits.

In October, the federal government announced that Social Security beneficiaries will see no increase in their benefit checks in 2011. That will mark the second year in a row with no increase.

The lame ducks have a majority in this session so they can do what ever. It doesn't matter because next session will have a new sheriff in town and Nancy is going to have to go sit in the broom closet.

Seniors still make out better if they get COLA raises every year that cover the true cost of inflation.

Whatever it goes up will be rolled in to what the next cola % is based on. Just like savings with compounded interest.

“Well, I am one of those old folks and I not only vote NO, but H*** NO! Stop it.”

And I am one of those old folks and I vote NO.
What is $250. suppose to do, except run up debt.
Are the Dem's so DIM that they believe 250. can make a difference in one persons life.

If any of our seniors really need help, then lets help them. Give them food stamps, free rent, a voucher for a winter coat and most of all heat for the winter. I am 75, have been self employed for more than 50 years, still work most days and I am happy, warm, content and pay my own way. That is my American Dream.

$250 won’t even cover the increase in my electric bill.

Not to mention the increases in food and fuel.

These Democrat idiots are so friggin’ transparent! Do they really think some feel-good bribe will make up for their insane addiction to socialist nanny state-spending, combined with corporate welfare?

This is no time to increase welfare payments to the seniors. We should be reducing and phasing out Social Security welfare payments over a 3-5 year period.

Speak for your.

Many of us have paid in to SS/Medicare for decades. If Congress spent the money for other things, that is not OUR fault.

Maybe not, so that 20-cent increase in gas since the last time I stopped at the gas pump must just be a figment of my imagination.

I've notice alot of figments in recent months. Must be a part of getting old. LOL

Be careful! People who think logically are and out outspoken are not appreciated very much. Life is so much easier and more fun when people view $250 as an immense amount of money.

the democrats, like most other congress critters, are trying to establish the exact worth of a voter's vote.

They know that corporations and labor unions require millions of dollars, if not billions.

So, in an attempt to reduce the spending necessary to stay in office they are attempting to see how much it would cost to buy the vote of individual voters. After all a million individual votes might not cost as much as a single corporation's or union's support. Why not give it a shot/

And pray tell - how are they going to pay for this year-end bribe to seniors?

The same way they paid for the last one.

Sounds like another RAT Trap.

Such wonderful people, those bed-wetting liberals...when they are in charge - they want to send seniors to the death panels; when they're sucking wind, they want to give seniors a bonus.

Actually, they heard that seniors were a huge factor in slam-dunking their asses on November 2nd, and they're just trying to bribe, er, win them back again.

I would urge all seniors to use that money to find an different seniors organization to sign up with, and DUMP the AARP...they are NOT your friends.
But, it's what liberals do, and it does us more good than them...

SHOVEL

...states even have homestead exemptions for seniors over 65.

My exemption reduced my property tax by $72.03 this year. BFD.

Actually inflation is taking hold. In reality they should raised the payment. However I can see them not raising it in order to try and keep the darn thing somewhat solvent down the road. So because in reality there is inflation despite what the Obama administration says I think the $250 is a good idea. Flame suit on. Fire away.

I have a better proposal for the deceitful Dems. How about you jerks just give us that 2% cola raise you beat us out of knowing full well that the cost of everything has soared over the past two years. That won't cost you near as much this year and will keep us able to pay the bills down the road. Only the total idiots will be so blinded by that $250.00 to notice that it is just more smoke and mirrors to conceal another permanent reduction in our lifelong purchasing power. It might work in Kenya but it won't work here.
