Republicans Love 'Modern Family,' Democrats Favor 'Dexter,' New Study Shows

by Chris Harnick, posted Nov 10th 2010 10:45AM

'Modern Family,' a seemingly liberal show about a blended family -- with a gay couple and adopted kids -- is among the favorites of Republicans. Say what?

According to a new study by Experian Simmons, Republicans favor many of TV's biggest hits such as 'Modern Family,' 'American Idol' and 'Dancing With the Stars.' On the Democrat side, TV favorites include cable shows like 'Dexter' and 'Mad Men.'

"The big shows with mass appeal tend to have above-average scores from Democrats and Republicans but with higher concentrations of Republicans," John Fetto, senior marketing manager at Experian Simmons, told The Hollywood Reporter. "Looking at the Democrats side, I don't mean to make light of it, but they seem to like shows about damaged people. Those are the kind of shows Republicans just stay away from."

Unsurprisingly, the top show for Republicans is 'Glenn Beck' and 'Countdown With Keith Olbermann' for Democrats. But who knew Democrats favored 'Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami'?

Personally ... I have only watched three shows from the Republican list (Glenn Beck, V and Desperate Housewives) and I have watched two shows from the Democrat list (Dexter and Mad Men.)

I have never seen and/or don't watch the rest of the shows on either list.

Julia Stiles is now on “Dexter” and all grown up. Eventhough she’s a flaming lib, she’s rather attractive.

What the bleep is “Dexter?” These libs live in a fantasy world created by Hollywood.

CC, Wow! I’m with ya! The only show I recognize is Beck’s, but I don’t watch it.

I watch one show, Sons of Anarchy, which my wife says has no redeeming qualities. :-} And I’m a 59 year old across the board conservative with a deep belief in God and my faith. Go figure.

Where one “family” is gay and have a “child”, sometimes rips into churchgoers in their scenes..are we talking about RINO’s or DIABLOS?

Dexter is about a serial killer who only hunts other serial killers. Very good show. Suprised that Libs like it ‘cause it definitely pro capital punishment.

Are we that divided that we have to say that, “Democrats have to have a playlist, and Republicans have a playlist.” For crying out loud, this is rediculous.

I’m not really certain if this survey is indicative of anything. I think someone was just filling space to keep his paycheck coming. With the exception of Glenn Beck on occasion, I can’t say I’ve seen any of these shows.

Funny. I actually watch Dexter, and that Modern Family is stupid.

Jonah Goldberg had an article about the show in National Review.

It's like The Godfather or The Sopranos: there's an ethic of loyalty to the group that is in some ways admirable combined with viciousness to people outside the group.

It's the same sort of thing you can find (in less self-conscious fashion) in ancient warrior sagas.

Does the mixture of admirable courage and loyalty with cruelty and exploitation of outsiders make it better or worse than another kind of story?

I don't know, but Dexter takes the formula way too far: the serial killer with his own "moral code".

This is JMO - but that show should be taken off the air. Here in Indy that show has caused waves because an Indiana teen idolized Dexter and tried to imitate him by strangling his 10 year old brother.

Seriously, this is the kind of values you want to teach your kids????

I call BS on this survey. Olberdork has what 185,000 viewers on a good night.

It IS ridiculous! I eagerly await the weekly episode of “Dexter” and am sorry when it’s over. And I’m about as Conservative as one can get! Our next door neighbor’s grown daughter emails me after every episode and we chat about the show. She’s also Very Conservative! Even named her puggle “Reagan”!!

Agreed. It's a rather lame attempt to put viewers in demographic boxes. Who cares...you watch what you watch.

Me? One of the few shows I actually do watch regularly is "Hell's Kitchen". Too bad we can't have similar show named, "Hell's Presidency". I would enjoy seeing a teary-eyed Obama get eliminated before the first episode break of the first episode.

I love “modern family”

Its funny, its real. Its about a family with all sort of flaws and also with alot of loveable things about them. thats real life. yeah, theres a gay brother and his partner with their adopted asian child. Theres the sister with her dingy husband and modern kids and the patriarch and his second wife who is much younger and columbian and her child from a previous marriage.

Maybe the fact that more republicans like the show kind of proves that their not as “racist” as people like to believe.
