It will be a long time before I forget Bill Kristol's exhortation in early August 2010 that Republicans should Just Shut Up about Charlie Rangel.

the Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol said on “Fox News Sunday” when asked what Republicans should do about Rangel...The idea that republicans should go around throwing stones at Charlie Rangel is just foolish on their part.”

Rangel: 'I have no real chance of fighting back'

And no need to. Absent a criminal conviction on his tax evasion charges, the worst the ethics panel will do is slap his wrist a little.

“I see no evidence of corruption. It’s hard to answer the question of personal financial benefit. I think the short answer is probably no. Do I believe that based on the record that Congressman Rangel took steps to benefit himself based on his position in Congress? No. I believe that the congressman, quite frankly, was overzealous in many of the things he did. And sloppy in his personal finances.”- Mr Chisam, Ethics Committee Atty.

I often wondered if it were possible to bribe an attorney on the Ethics Committee. Now I just wonder how much was paid.

If this were the average Joe, would popularity among his peers have any sway against criminal charges?

Generally speaking, no. That's just the main point which we've seen illustrated so many times during the past few decades: a Democrat politico, especially a "minority" Democrat politico, can often get away with things that just about no one else can. It's called a double standard.

Haven't read through the thread but I hope they don't let him off with just a reprimand!
