Bomb sniffing dogs require highly skilled workers, another reason the current administration probably wouldn’t like it....not exactly an affirmative action low skill/high pay job.
I know it won’t happen, but this problem could be countered by contracting civilian companies such as American K-9 who provide dog handlers to assist the military overseas and let them take care of this aspect of security. These companies would maintain the high professional standards required of K-9 handlers without worrying about the TSA f-ing it up. One company could not fill all the slots at all the airports while maintaining their quota of people in combat zones, so you would see a surge of new K-9 businesses starting up all over the nation and new job opportunities for people who’ve acquired this skill or would like to learn it. A lot of military dog handlers would gladly jump into this sphere of work in the civilian sector, myself included. TSA already has their own K-9 program, so if this idea was implemented I could see both privately contracted handlers working side by side with TSA dog handlers to meet the numbers quota, which would be quite large. Just replace the goofy scanners and metal detectors with competent dog teams, x-ray carry-on luggage, fire the power hungry thugs and things would run a lot smoother without civil rights violations being a big concern.
Bomb sniffing dogs require less skilled workers than the Body scanners? Please.
