) don’t think there is one chance in a million that Beck will support Romney. Fellow LDS or not.

I can appreciate your perspective. Most likely you're not a member of the church if I understand correctly?

There is a certain unwritten thing that drives such blind ambition among the Priesthood holders. I grew up with that total controlling and obedience thing that goes way beyond common sense.

Beck is trying much too hard to do the bidding of the church leaders and he uses it to his advantage in appearances, books, private meetings and other proselytizing methods.

I can appreciate Sarah Palin's willingness to get on that band wagon. She also took advantage of John McCain. Politicians must always be politicians; religion is another matter when it comes to Mormonism.

You’re right, I’m not LDS.

I agree with much of your post; all of it, in fact. That said, despite the efforts in the local stakes, this Romney push doesn’t appear to be going anyplace. At least if the LDS folks I know are any indication. Mind you, Romney would win the state, should things get that far, but it won’t be as big as many think.

Nevertheless, for Beck to endorse Romney would require Beck to refudiate (lol) HIS OWN BRAND, which is a combination of populism, conservative, and libertarian. Which explains his simpatico with Palin. Romney is none of these things. It’s possible for Beck to endorse him for reasons of religious solidarity, but I don’t see it. His credibility would go to zero almost overnight. As I say, he’s far more likely to remain neutral.

And I sincerely doubt that Beck is going to risk his “empire” by choosing Romney as the hill to die on.

I don’t believe Romney can get out of the Republican primary, myself. Not sure whether Huck will run or not, but this I am sure of: He will dine on broken glass & arsenic before he endorses Romney. I think there is no love lost between these two.

It will be interesting, that’s for sure!

RINO Orrin Hatch:
2009 - ACU Rating 88
2009 - Lifetime ACU Rating 89
On the issues: Hard-Core Conservative
2009 - Heritage Alliance -- 84%
2009 - Club for Growth - 88%
2007-2008 - Christian Coalition of America - 90%

NRA Rating - A+
National Right-to-Life Center -- 100
Family Research Council - 88

NARAL - 5
ACLU - 0
He's not my favorite senator, and he occasionally goes way off the reservation. But the word "RINO" has no meaning if you are going to apply it to a person with those ratings, just because you don't like who he supports for President.

Orrin Hatch On The Issues

Again, there are a few troubling aspects of Orrin Hatch. But he's hardly a liberal or a moderate when it comes to most issues conservatives care about, and his 2009 ratings suggest he hasn't turned squishy-liberal in his old age.

combination of populism, conservative, and libertarian

Oddly, the folks at "On the Issues" put libertarian and populist on opposing sides of the box. Not sure I agree with them.

But in terms of populism, Mitt Romney is rated a "populist-leaning consrvative", just like Sarah Palin.

BTW, I'm not endorsing the "on the issues" organization or their methodology. I'm just choosing a known ranking organization for comparison purposes, mostly to discount this notion that Orrin Hatch is some flaming liberal RINO.

I’ve already bet $100 with a friend who’s a big Beck fan that he WILL endorse Romney. Both are Mormons and I put my money on it.

Beck was hating on poor old W toward the end, he certainly will not be philosophically inclined to support Mitt.

Perhaps if Beck, who joined the LDS church in 1999, was from Utah, he would understand that many other Mormons would expect him to have a strong predisposition to support the first LDS member who really could become POTUS.

A Mormon without Utah roots or without a multi generational mormon heritage is usually a different breed of cat than the Utah species.

Just like their reputation for a strong work ethic, and self sufficiency, Mormons enjoy and deserve a solid reputation for patriotism and love of country, but the relationship is often a bit different than that held by those of most other faiths.

I believe I have a basis for this opinion.

I'll be willing to send 100 bucks to FR as a tribute in your name if Beck takes a definitive stand supporting Romney against all others during the early primary silly season. If I deem it time to concede I'll contact you.

Beck has put himself out as a conservative's conservative. If he supports Governor Romney as described above, IMO it can almost be for no other reason than his shared religion. I will be amazed and disappointed in him. If you call it , remind me, I'll pay up. If I win, You will owe nothing on my account, your C note to your friend is punishment enough.

My guess is his RINO label comes from his half-hearted support of various forms of amnesty, which is wildly unpopular with the locals. Especially those of us in S. Utah, as we are totally overrun with amigos, being only 6 miles from the AZ border.

The locals are sick of the packed emergency rooms. My own doctor (who is a transplanted SF lib!) has now closed her practice to all but private pay and private insurance patients. (long story here, but she’s had enough, too) She intends to retire upon full implementation of Obamacare.

They ARE taking local jobs, for below normal wages. I spoke to a contractor just this weekend who is hiring illegals at $ 5.00 an hour. I asked him why, and he said “My other choice is to go out of business, because my competitors are doing it.”

The locals are tired of standing behind them in line at the grocery store, with their food stamp card. These gals are always pregnant, and they have at least two other kids in tow.

The schools are diminishing in quality and going down fast. Most of these kids are not only NOT proficient in English, which is expected, but they are not proficient in Spanish, either. Nor are their parents! It has become a nightmare here. And there is no “backup” option of a system of private/parochial schools, such as the network of Catholic schools back east. What a mess.

Everytime Orrin Hatch opens his trap with another heart-tugging story about the plight of the illegals, he loses more voters here. Because we can see with our own two eyes that we’re being robbed blind.

Hatch is no RINO, and is actually a fairly reliable Conservative. His biggest problem, to me, is that he is so non-confrontational that he sometimes is totally lacking in spine.

However, it is clear he supports Romney (at least in large part) because of his Mormon religion.

Still, people need to fully grasp how difficult it is going to be to beat Mitt Romney.

If Romney were not a mormon, would RINO Orrin feel the same?

Doubtful.

Governor Palin has my vote. IMHO, if Romney is nominate, he will be the last PUB nominated.

Just like a great many politicians who are out there, these two guys know that the best way to sell liberalism is to just happen to be a professed member of the same faith as those you try and appeal to, and use that appeal to get elected and pass off liberal policies.

Romney and Hatch are both members of the religion of “Liberalism”, the religion of Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Joe Lieberman, Barack Obama and many more. Trust me, political beliefs are very much the religion for a great many people.
