Simplified for argument:
Proposal A - The govt taxes the people $100M, spends $100M to feed 1000 poor people for a year
Proposal B - The govt taxes the people $10M, gives church $10M, church feeds 10,000 poor people for a year
It's obvious to me that the taxpayer is better served contracting with the charity as the social service provider.
Of course, I prefer:
Proposal C - The govt taxes the people $0, doesn't fund social services at all, leaving it to the charities who do it best. Local communities and individuals, relieved of part of their tax burden, efficiently allocate their giving to the greatest needs.
Proposal C is a thing of beauty to behold.
