Japanese media allege NK preparing nuke test
The Korean Times ^ | 11/17/2010 | Kim Se-jeong

Japan’s Sankei Shimbun reported Wednesday that North Korea may be making preparations for a possible third nuclear test. The newspaper published satellite imagery from the North’s Punggye-ri nuclear site, which it alleged showed work toward the test in progress.

The daily quoted an expert as saying, “Based on what’s been shown in the photos, it is clear that North Korea is preparing for a new experiment. Chances are high that something will happen in the next six months.”

The report followed comments by Siegfried Hecker, a former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Charles Jack Pritchard, a former U.S. special envoy to North Korea, who visited Pyongyang earlier this month and said the regime appeared to be building a new experimental light-water reactor.

They added that the reactor, expected to produce 25 to 30 megawatts of electricity, will be finished by 2012.

“The concrete was poured, and power lines were erected, indicating the construction was in its early stages,” said Pritchard.

Keeping a wary watch, the South Korean government only said it would like to verify the news report.

Nuclear Testing 101

This is how the USGS tells a nuclear explosion to a natural earthquake. The top seismograph(in red) is produced by a underground nuclear explosion. The bottom two (in color blue) are caused by a natural earthquake.

Obama's weakness is the "market pull" for all of this, at the end of the day.

Japanese media and government all "get it". The empty suit is bringing this all upon Northeast Asia.

The underground bomb has a unique signature.

North Korea may be making preparations for a possible third nuclear test.

why not? North Korea is China's puppet, and it is useful for China to occassionaly use them to poke S.Korea, Japan, and the USA in the eye.

Certainly, the DPRK has nothing to fear from Obama.

I am very interested seeing the data and how far they have come along from the last test.

I think you have a typo. The second curve is indeed an earthquake, but the third curve, contrary to your assignment, is actually the signature of my doctor.

Do you believe that the previous two blasts represented successful detonation of a nuclear device? My instinct is that they were duds. Of course, that would still make for a good dirty bomb, no?

IMHO, the first two explosions were very low yield explosions. My guess from 1-5 kilotons. It is within the power of North Korea to make a “dirty” bomb. Any nuclear power in the world can make a “dirty” bomb.

If it registered on a seismograph quite strongly it was definitely a nuclear weapon.

I wonder how much of NK testing is getting to the Iranians? Could this next test be a test of the Iranian design?

Yes, I have no doubt that they were, I can also see them at missile and rocket test, but I would like know if the Iranians are using the NK design or one of their own? If one of their own designs, how long will it be before the Iranians test it?
