“McCain backs off, agrees that there is waste, but then says the waste should be cut but reinvested. McCain has built his entire career as an internationalist of course hes going to want the $$$ reinvested which is the same effect as no cuts at all!”
If the waste was reinvested to protect our borders that would be a good way of agreeing with McCain and knocking him at the same time.
We have 10K ICBMs pointed right at Russia. Believe me, we don't need 60K or more troops stationed in Germany to project force. Did those troops keep Russia out of Georgia?
Korea can defend Korea. What precisely is our interest in keeping North Korea out of South Korea? It's not like South Korea is a big consumer of US goods, thanks to their own protectionist trade agreements with us (ones that we happily sign).
After WWII, we had a moral obligation to protect Japan. That was 65 years ago - literally a lifetime ago. Let Japan rearm if they're worried about China.
We can no longer afford to provide defense for the US homeland, as well as nations abroad. That is our new financial reality. We shouldn't ignore it. That's not going to make the problem go away.
They can pay for their own protection. They can cut some entitlements and fund their own military.
We’re broke.
True, but how many people here are willing to hand over their Social Security checks so that the DOD can have carte blanche forever?
It's time to get real. We're broke and something has to give. And I don't believe for a second that every DOD dollar is well-spent and not subject to waste.
