Thu, Nov 18 08:43 PM Washington, Nov 18 (IANS) Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Thursday pledged another $500 million for the world's poor as she hailed a historic moment that will help bring financial services, particularly savings accounts, to hundreds of millions of people living on less than $2 a day.

Speaking at the foundation-hosted Global Savings Forum in Seattle, the first global gathering focused on the role of savings in the developing world, Gates urged leaders in government, banking, mobile communications, and international development to work together to build a new kind of financial infrastructure to bring savings to the poor.

yeah! Let’s abolish private charity because some freepers don’t agree with where the money is going.
If you have $500 million of YOUR money to give away, you can spend it on anything you want.

“$500 million would buy a lot of cell phones, which has been shown to help third world people more than anything.”

OK so you should create a successful company, make $500 million and you can buy as many cell phones as you want.

Well, Melinda made her money the old fashioned way...by marriage.

Nice splice.

If I was like you I could go to the FR page “posts by newsjunky” and make a pretty interesting splice of your statements.

I could probably make you sound like Michael Moore.

Hmm, somehow I think giving money to fund abortion isn’t exactly ‘charity’.

I never said abolish private foundations or charity, I only question the priorities and hypocrisy of people like Gates.

But this is to help the poor save money so that they can bring themselves out of that situation instead of just spend&debt. Other charities just give them a ‘check’ or some food and they will continue to do so forever.
Or in other words, most charities give them a fish but this will help them so that they can catch their own fish.

I’m sorry, but I don’t trust Melinda Gates, and especially not their foundation which is one of the worldwide largest abortion foundations.

Just give it to the US Treasury. That is what Bill and His Dad want the little people to do.

OK I understand that. But the idea itself is sound. It makes more sense than the liberal/Bush policy of encouraging debt and consumption.

The sad part is that that the Gates are Liberal Free Trader Globalists. So much of their recent wealth is gained by shipping jobs out of America to other countries.

Instead of giving it to charities that will spend more on overhead than they spend on the actual poor....it would be better if they re-invested that money into creating jobs in America.

This brings to mind a statement that my mother made often in our household while I was growing up>

"JUST BECAUSE A PERSON MAKES, OR HAS A LOT OF MONEY, DOESN'T MEAN THEY KNOW ANYTHING"

I think this idiot should do whatever she wants, so long as she is not campaigning to force the rest of us to do likewise against our will or ability.

It would be fascinating, however, if she had done so quietly, without banging her drum loudly, and see if the rest of the world notices one iota of difference among the world's poor.

I saw this and I just want to know exactly what logic went into this.

Almost all so-called charities are money-laundering schemes to evade taxes. The way it works is to send money to other "non-profit" groups and friends to run "awareness campaigns." Money is raised from gullible people and matched by several government grants. That then disappears into "awareness campaigns" that raise awareness about poor people in Africa.

An example of a fraudulent fundraising was the hundreds of millions of dollars raised by Red Cross in the name of the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Only a small fraction was allotted to the Haitians and even that was in the form of some cheap stuff and not money. The money for the cheap goods like tents is usually given to cronies who get the contracts. Most of the money disappears into "awareness campaigns" and those who run the charities blame the politicians in countries like Haiti.

This tax-deductable donation to foreign lands is subsidised by the American taxpayer. It’s time these liberal a..holes did something for America such as repatriate and pay taxes on the money the have stored overseas.
