Government Executive ^ | November 18, 2010 | Emily Long

The 2011 pay raise for federal employees is in a holding pattern. Proposals to cut or freeze salaries could have a broader impact on government recruiting, retention and morale, but agencies have other tools available to reward workers.

Hmmm...interesting. Social Security recipients don't get a raise, yet gov't workers do? Another question: Since SS benefits aren't raised if the inflation rate is below a certain figure (e.g., 2 percent), does that mean that 10 consecutive years of 1.999% inflation yields no increase in SS benefits for 10 years, or does it consider the year-over-year increase in prices?

Pretty sure it’s the latter. No increase.

That’s the evil person’s attitude: “Mine is mine and yours is mine.”

Riiiiiiight! They'll either leave government or not sign on in order to "improve" their sagging morale and get paid 30 to 40% less, decrease their retirement picture and have far fewer vacations days per year. Gotta keep 'em happy with their high salaries and early retirement so they'll remain the "humble" public servants that they are.

>>Observers warn attempts to pare the payroll could set government back when it comes to maintaining a first-class workforce.

“first-class workforce” as a description of government bureaucrats.. The mind boggles.

Feds working under the old retirement system CSRS might retire if they have 30 plus years and 55 years old. The ones under the new system FERS have 1/3 of their retirement under Social Security. The minimum age for Soc Security motivates the FERS fed worker retirement plans. Freezing the pay increase will not cause a massive exodus of fed workers except for the ones under the older system CSRS. Many of them know that RIFs (reduction in force) are coming with the new Congress and budgetary problems. The DoD/NASA workers went thru this during Bush 41 and Clinton, but the non DoD workers are going to face culture shock as their departments face layoffs and reductions.

reward workers

Do government workers need any more of a reward? Aren't they already paid 60% more than private sector workers, not to mention the benefits!?

Federal Pay Gap Video

The arrogance of these people. They've gotten a raise every year during the recession so far. My husband had his salary cut by 5% and was then laid off. I hope the new Republicans have the stones to not just freeze, but cut some of this crap!

That didn't stop the private sector from doing it. If government employees want to quit their jobs and come work with me then they can see was layoffs, pay freezes, pay cuts, and understaffing is really like.

Most people that work for the federal govt. for 2 years can not get hired in the private sector. My brother worked for the Veterans Administration in DC after graduating college. He said private sector employers in the DC area would not hire people that had worked for the govt. for more than a couple years.
Meanwhile, my youngest brother works for the Bureau Of Prisons(The Big House)in PA. After 21 years with them he has about 6 weeks of vacation a year. He could retire now if he wanted to at age 44 on a partial pension.

I was a foreign service officer for 29 years until I retired earlier this year to take a job with a corporation. I enjoyed my government service and believe I delivered good value to the government. I collect a full pension now, which is simply part of my overall compensation for my federal service. As for freezing salary levels for current federal employees, it’s happened before and I suppose it could happen again.

Exactly. There are a surprising number of “levellers” (as the Cromwell-era proto-communists were once called in England) here in FR!
