'Christmas' Saviors: We're Winning the War (Boycott of Dick's Sporting Goods)
Newser ^ | 11/19/10

Dick's Sporting Goods gets the unlucky honor of being this year's villain in the “War on Christmas” campaign. The American Family Association has singled it out for a boycott this holiday season because the chain is “against” the holiday, reports Advertising Age.

One of its offenses is having a "Holiday Shop” section on its website, with no mention of Christmas.

All in all, though, the defense of Christmas has been going splendidly for the AFA, says a spokesman; over five years, the percentage of retailers acknowledging Christmas has soared from 20% to 80%, he says. And while Dick's may be "the 'most anti-Christmas' of all," only eight retailers remain on the “Companies Against Christmas” list, including Barnes & Noble, CVS, and RadioShack.

The campaign is “not bullying," says the rep. "It's consumer advocacy."

I have no use for Dick's anyway. Cabela's, Sportsman's Warehouse...now those are sporting goods stores. If they don't have something I need, there's always the Sports Authority website, or better yet, Play It Again Sports.

Merry Christmas to all, and Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends and cousins. To those who celebrate Kwanzaa, Solstice, Muslim Shave Your Goat/Wife Day or Wiccan Bark at the Moon Day, well, you're pathetic and who gives a crap about you?

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Well, I didn’t see anything but Airsoft guns on their website.

Ive been in Dick’s once since they bought up our local Gallyans. Their new store over on the NW side of Indy; The Firearms section was just pathetic. I used to love Gallyans, but it’s gone down hill since “Dick” took it over.

In a casual survey of our Mall on Staten Island of more than 200 stores my wife and I found only 3 stores that displayed the word Christmas on the windows facing the mall walkway:Sears,Hallmark and Build a Bear Workshop.

Oh, brother. What does shopping have to do with Christmas anyways?

Aren't there bigger fish to fry?

Regardless of what the holiday is called, the massive temples of the consumerism religion will be patronized by their followers 52 weeks out of the year.

What should you call your promotion that covers Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years?

On homestarrunner.com, they call it "Decemberween".

Seems appropriate, since it starts well back in October.

I think that’s the mail-order thing. They have lots of guns in the store. Sports Authority, now, they don’t even have bow’n’arrows anymore. I never shop there.

Christmas doesn’t begin until the night of Thanksgiving, when we start the season by singing carols around the piano while snacking on leftovers. Black Friday, the decorations start going up.

Hell, they’ve even got Santa early this year! Pisses me off we’re already in the Xmas (not Christmas) season and have completely passed over Thanksgiving - for the last two years.

SOROS has shares in CVS so I’ve seen posted some where on FR.

Office Max wishes you a Happy Holiday on their door.

Shop at Bass Pro Shop instead.”

I did my fair share there today. Shopped for all the guys on the list. They have some really great sales going on, everyone is very helpful and all say Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas.

The boycott of Dick’s SG is over-—the good guys won this one! Merry Christmas—not hollydaze.

You are the one being disingenous.

You know exactly what the whole “holiday” vs Christmas thing is about.

Anyhow the matter is moot since Dick’s has seen the error of its ways.

Add ACE Hardware to the boycott list. They are celebrating “Holiday” rather than Christmas.

What should you call your promotion that covers Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years?

A number of posters have presented their ideas, what’s yours?

The promo should be clearly stated:

Gifts for Thanksgiving - Happy Thanksgiving
Gifts for New Year - Happy New Year
Gifts for Holy Christmas? MERRY CHRISTMAS!

HAPPY HOLIDAY IS A COP OUT...IT INSULTS PEOPLE’S INTELLIGENCE IN SO MANY WAYS.

Seems simple enough.

The problem is that the store needed to come up with something simply, what you presented is accurate, but not simple.

Realize that what you come up with has to complete against everyone elses slogan.

So, head back to the drawing board, and give it some thought, think ‘marketing’, and come up with a simple, catchy phrase.

My Christmas present to my wife is a Walther’s PK380 and a Concealed Carry Permit.
