LAKE FOREST – Roxy, an 8-month old German shepherd puppy that was rescued this week by Coastal German Shepherd Rescue after a flood of donations from Orange County pet lovers, is recovering well from surgery.

The black and tan shepherd is slowly waking up after being sedated following a two-hour surgery to help reconnect elbow joints in her two front legs – a condition that German shepherds are genetically predisposed to.

I am so sorry and so sad for you losing the last of your beloved cocker spaniels. She was ready to go though and you did the right thing in making her last few hours comfortable and easing her over to the Rainbow Bridge with all the other little gals and guys who have crossed over as well. Take solace there is no more pain (except that in your heart which we know is like a knife in the heart) but...come Thursday when you sit down with family to give thanks for all your blessings....you will include this latest blessing who gave more than her share and loved you all as you did her. Blessings.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cockers. I know how incredibly sad the loss of a beloved pet can be. But I firmly believe a loving God has a special place for our four legged friends. And your two cockers are there right now, running in the fields together, playing, chasing balls and barking at squirrels. Here's a place you might visit that could help soothe your pain. Good luck to you and take care.

I’m so sorry. Hearts heal and I know you have many happy memories of your babies.

Get a rescue dog....save a dog who needs you....if you can.

Tho your heart is breaking, try to remember that you will all be together again one day. Father loves His animals, and I know they will all be waiting for us.

Prayers that Father send you comfort, and peace at this most difficult time.

Kalee I’m so sorry to read about the loss of your two Cockers. I grew up with Cocker Spaniels and remember my Mother trying to use a clothespin to hold their ears up so they wouldn’t get in their food, lol.

I know how it hurts to lose them and sincerely feel for you.

Thank you Joe. I’m glad to read about Roxy, always good to read a ‘happy’ story. My little Yorkie just had minor surgery and I’m pampering him right now.

Why dogs don’t live as long as people
by Robin Downing, DVM

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owner, his wife, and their little boy were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure. They felt he could learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. The little boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

The little boy, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, “Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?” The four-year- old continued, “Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

Oh I’m so sorry. I have 2 cockers and this just breaks my heart. There is a dog somewhere tonight who deserves the same kind of love your dogs had. I hope you are able to give that to another dog very soon. Again, I’m so sorry. :(
