Do we even understand the physics that occur at that pressure and temperature, and what type of matter is at the core?

We really do not know. The data we have is only through earthquakes. Earthquake waves help scientists figure out the distances to each of the section of the earth’s interior.The liquid outer core surrounds the inner core and is believed to be composed of iron mixed with nickel and trace amounts of lighter elements.
