One of my friends worked at the Forum in Inglewood in the 1980’s and worked at the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope concert in 1986. The lineup included Sting, U2, Peter Gabriel, etc....& Joan Baez. He said he had never seen the Forum empty out so fast as when Baez too the stage about 1/3 of the way into the concert. The bathrooms & food vendors were overwhelmed.

I never liked her voice. It is an awful high pitched vibratto that grates on your nerves. I am not sure how anyone can listen to her except for one song, Diamonds and Rust. However, I always thought her persona was embellished and publicized by Bob Dylan who had and still maintains a large following. On her own, she was not very good. Joan Didion’s book, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, has a great essay in it on this hippie, artsy school thingy that Baez had in the ‘70s. She charged a fortune to sit around and rap. Now she is pretending to be a bird. Cuckoo!
