Food Safety Bill Gets Post-Turkey Day Vote (There's still time: won't vote until after Thanks..)
NPR ^ | Nov. 19, 2010 | April Fulton

Posted on 11/20/2010 7:34:48 AM PST by Mrs. Don-o

Just about the time you're tucking into your Thanksgiving leftovers, the Senate will get around to a final vote on the food safety bill. By Thursday night in the Capitol, it was all about negotiating with the lone hold-out, Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK).

Coburn had threatened to hold up the food safety bill to get a vote to ban spending on lawmaker's pet projects, a.k.a. an "earmarks" ban. And eventually, he got that assurance.

[snip]

The bill would give the Food and Drug Administration more authority to recall tainted foods and increase inspections, as well as put new produce safety requirements in place.

But even if the Senate passes the bill before the end of the year, it would still need House approval to become law.

And, it may have lost some key support in the produce sector ...

Those may be hurdles for another day, but not too far down the road, cautions Ami Gadhia, policy counsel for Consumers Union.

"The bill took a big step forward this week. Now the question is, can we beat the clock? There has to be a bill on the President's desk before Congress adjourns, or the whole process starts over next year at square one with a new bill."

Sorry to be relying on NPR, but I just wanted to get the latest word, which is: the thing's still not passed, and there's a chance it might not pass the Senate PLUS the House before the end of the year.

Here's a link to an "anti" article

I mean, dang. It's a 1,000-page bill. They shouldn't push this kind of ducking monstrosity in a lame-duck session, I don't care what it's about. Especially with All the Unsual Suspects chanting, "Hurry up! Time's Running Out! Pass it now, read it later!"

I don't trust any salesman that says "Don't ask, just sign."

If what is in place isn’t working, it’s because it’s just like ICE...no one is looking...they might have to do some work

Early next week, please call your Senators. The Dems set it up for a last-minute exemption of ‘family’ farms to get the greenie vote. Some of them have been fooled, for they’ll still be included.
Think of how much you’d like the Sebilius equivalent to be running the food industry (every part of it).
The hapless Rs on the Ag Committee will say that this is a big improvement over what it could have been.
Tell them that such an excuse no longer flies. They should oppose the dickens out of this thing.
Keep up the citizen pressure...

Utah, Georgia, Wyoming, Tennessee, North Carolina: you've got REPUBLICAN Senators co-sponsoring this thing.

At the very least, tell them to have the decency to put off a vote on this 1,000-page major-overhaul vehicle until January, 2011 – so that people can read it and evaluate the true budgetary and regulatory burden.

Third round of emails just went out. Snail Mail was sent last week. And, I have both these scoundrels on the phone list for Monday.
This stupid stuff has GOT to stop. Government is already far too intrusive, and very far beyond valid Constitutional limits on many issues.

It’s time to take back the country. Killing off S.510 is a good place to start.

Amen! And thanks for the heads up. The good news here in Georgia, is that, last I heard Saxby and Chambliss have switched to a NO vote, which is stunning, as Saxby was a co-sponsor : o

I will be making my Nationwide calls starting Monday bright and squirrelie ; }

May God give us strength and wisdom.

Whoe is going to support all the Amish & Mennonites, etc, who raise food on their farms, which they then sell to others?

That is their living—their legacy-their entire lifestyle & religion.

IF you haven’t had the chance to buy some of what they produce, you are missing alot.

Orrin Hatch can start to sell his Washington area home over this bill.

He will be sent packing in 2012...for this bill alone, if not for everything else. Mormons are really angry over this.

Two of the worst RHINO’s in the US Senate, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson are not only co-sponsors but will be voting for this bill in spite of the outraged protests from GA residents. They are both go along get along political hacks from Georgia.

These are the same two that were hot to trot to vote for Amnesty a couple of years ago until the public pinned their ears back. At the last minute they decided to vote no.

Please feel free to call these good ole boys up and give them a piece of your mind.
