“But I don’t know anyone who actually thinks you could make such a system work.”

Thanks for writing the article then.

I've spent many years working with some of the largest and most expensive statistical measurement systems ever devised ~ and I've also worked with Sigma 3 approaches.

The problem with these government appointees is they are coming from backgrounds where you have stratified samples, well understood sampling universes, and a belief that you can actually have random sampling. It's an age group thing.

They need to get some folks in there with a tad more gray at the top ~ just before the bald spots.

I'm thinking a minimum age for folks with an understanding of how to do this might be 65, maybe 68?

The problem with Israeli methods is they end up having a higher death rate from bombing than we do.

Which is a lesson ~ if you locate your country next door to a bunch of rabid Islamists with Iranian financial backers you will end up with bombs. It's much better to be next door to Canada and Mexico, and I'm sure the Israeli defense specialists would agree.

The point is you have to kill off the bad guys to get rid of the problems they bring. I like that idea of a box that has systems that will set off any explosive a passenger might be trying to carry onto the plane.

Weight and volume alone, compared to norms on a given skeleton with specific proportions should tell you who deviates from the norm. Materials for a bomb should weigh something and they should take up space ~ for the foreseeable future shape of ears and hair texture should give you everything you want TO DECIDE TO THOROUGHLY CHECK SOMEONE OUT.

You do this in two stages ~ first find deviations then check for errors.

Wisdom & governmental appointees...and statistics. It almost hurts to think of it.

Applying 3 Sigma techniques to airport screening is definitely intriguing.

Just an observation, but a valid one I believe. Your quality auditors know a lot of stuff ~ not just Sigma 3, but they've almost all had a career's worth of experience dealing with people, outside measurement systems, and techniques that seek to evalute performance through inference ~ rather than direct measurement.

They know "tricks" ~ like a reporting system document with a missing update page ~ that means NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION TO THE SMALL STUFF so why should we believe they are paying attention to the big stuff.

I love that "trick". It's so tacky, but so true.

I think some gray beards with Sigma 3 understanding could come up with something much more valuable than this "check 'em by their place in line" concept TSA is using. Figure out where the "missing page" analogues are for folks we need to look at closer. Is it the missing credit card ~ left behind, perhaps, for the use of another terrorist? Almost all tickets are purchased with credit cards, so why not check to see if everybody has their card with them ~ particularly the guys who buy ONE WAY TICKETS.

My goodness, did you see what I just did? I did a check on EVERYONE and all without pulling down their panties and fondling them.

I must be getting old ~ I bet that one right there gave us a better sample than anything TSA has come up with.

And so cheap!

Novel thought: Make Muslims fly on all Muslim aircraft with all Muslim crews. That way a bomber can make martyrs of his/her brother and sister Muslims. Also, all Muslim flights are easier for air defenses to locate and shoot down.

Also, all incoming and departing Muslim flights are in a designated part of the airport under maximum security. TSA scanners and gropers are used to man these security areas. All other non-Muslim passengers are exempt from TSA security.

Today TSA begins enforcing a new rule regarding names. Your ticket has to have a name on it that exactly matches your name on a government issued ID.

See how TSA has missed the boat here ~ if they can require that of EVERYONE why not ALSO make them match the name on the credit card (or have a good reason why not, e.g. chilluns').

It's almost as if there are people in TSA who WANT terrorists to be allowed to get on board planes ~ so they promulgate rules that consume everyone's time, but don't quite target terrorist behavior.

Do they imagine that non-whites wearing hajibs perhaps buy all their plane tickets with stolen credit cards? Wouldn't want to embarrass them over that eh.

An American custom agent on the Canadian border once asked me 'what is the value of the items that you are smuggling in?'......I LOL...for there was nothing of value that I had wanted to purchase in Canada but I did have a smoked ham that my relatives smoked hidden in the car. Quite delicious, too!!!

But after 30 years of gouing thru the border his frankness was refreshing!

And when it comes to the latest controversy roiling U.S. airport travelers — systems that can peer through clothing and show bodily details — Press has just one hope in mind for any new screening technology.

If that's his only hope he's not very bright.

He should hope that they don't CONTINUE the practice of placing bombs in body cavities, where the current screening technologies won't detect them.
