Exposing your paycheck
NY Post ^ | November 20, 2010 | Kyle Smith

Now that the midterm elections are over and a lame duck session of Congress has convened, the Democrats in charge can take a deep breath, put aside all the campaign rhetoric and get back to doing what they do best: destroying jobs.

Sitting on Harry Reid’s desk is a little-noticed economic hand grenade with its pin half-pulled called the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that has already passed the House and might well pass the Senate if Reid can put down a Republican filibuster. Dirty Harry has to be feeling lucky these days, having won reelection by a comfortable margin, and he’s proven before that when it comes to ultra-liberal legislation he’s willing to shoot first and worry about colleagues caught in the crossfire later.

The Paycheck Fairness Act seeks to finally end pay differences between men and women. It’s one of those well-intentioned pieces of righteousness that sounds like it was cooked up in an Ivy League womyn’s studies workshop circa 1988. For years, such business-illiterate ideas have led only to harmless campus marches where students can pretend they’re standing up to Nixon and Vietnam. But today seminar thinking has a way of making it all the way into the real economy.

Women earn 77 cents on the dollar compared to men. So what?

Men and women, you may have noticed, don’t do the same work.

I work at a warehouse and most (not all) guys make more than the women because most of the women won’t get on any of the equipment (4 different kinds of forklifts) or work in the heavy pick are (got to be able to pick up 50 lbs and up (by hand or with equipment).

You get extra pay for doing more work. What a concept! I guess this new law would even out the pay while shifting all the hard work to the guys as a measure of fairness. What a country.

USPS is about half male/half female. ALL employees who may move mail are required to pass a test to lift 70 lbs.

You guys got a 50 lb test and women won't take it?

Get 'em outta' there. People who can't do the work can't protect you in case of an accident where stuff falls on you. That's an unsafe working environment no one should be subject to ~ more pay isn't the answer ~ OSHA ought to be called in to check things out Fur Shur, and so should the insurance company. Bet they'd like to know you got a 50 lb test but the women won't take it yet they get to wander about the place.

Perhaps the bill should require — at least in the home states of those senators who voted for this “fairness” bill — that the rosters of professional sports teams, e.g. the LA Lakers, NY Giants, New England Patriots, Chicago Black Hawks, etc. be composed “fairly” of women as well as representations of dwarfs, cripples, blind, obese, and senior citizens, etc. to balance realistically the existing top flight, youthful, physically fit male athletes.

Ben Nelson, D-NE: Nay

Murkowski, R- AK: Not voting

Lol!

Nelson was the 41st vote!
The world’s worst toupee conceals a head capable of learning a lesson, apparently.

Landrieu: Yea (slow learner)
Bill Nelson: Yea (likewise dense)

I worked for a time in a factory shipping warehouse until the plant shut down. The product weighed on average 775 pounds so it was all handled by electric squeeze trucks which were driven by men and women but anything else heavy was forbidden to be lifted by hand by anyone! That’s right, I sometimes was slowed down because I needed to lift something that weighed forty pounds and I was required to get someone to assist me. I can put forty pounds at arm’s length overhead without effort but that was not allowed. Anything heavy enough to actually need two people to lift it could only be lifted with one of the lift trucks. The “safety” rules were absurd, they nitpicked you to death about stupid crap but ignored real dangers.

You misunderstand. We have a heavy work area that pays more. Most areas do not require heavy lifting. My main comment was the reason that most women don't learn to work the equipment or volunteer to work in the other “hard” areas, so they get paid less for a reason.

Our work place does not make you do anything unsafe and getting help to lift is encouraged. My comments were about why most women there make less. They don’t drive forklifts.
