Business's Game Plan on Obamacare: Resist, Not Repeal
By Steven Gray/Washington
Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010

Congressional Republicans are touting plans to repeal the Obama Administration's health care reform law, but face wariness for a full rollback from a key constituency: the business lobby.

In the weeks before the mid-term elections, many Republicans used the health care law to tap into anti-government sentiment and angst about the economy. In their "Pledge to America," Republican candidates committed to "repeal and replace the government takeover of health care" by any means necessary. Even John Boehner, the incoming House Speaker, on Tuesday filed a brief in support of a lawsuit filed by 20 states challenging the constitutionality of a central part of the new law requiring individuals to purchase health insurance. "ObamaCare is a job-killer, and our economy simply cannot afford this unprecedented, unconstitutional power grab by the federal government," Boehner said in a statement. (See 5 truths about health care.)

But few in the business community want to embark on a grueling process of a full repeal of health care reform, because they believe it will ultimately fail. Even if a repeal effort passes the Republican-led House, it is certain to die in a Senate still dominated by Democrats. If repeal legislation miraculously survives the Senate, President Obama would never sign it. The more viable strategy, business believes, is to try to tweak or eliminate key parts of the law. James Gelfand, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's director of health policy, says of the new law: "We'd like it to go away. But we're business people, and we're pragmatic."

I heard Hayley Barbour say something similar....because of the veto....get rid of parts...and then in 2012...get rid of the whole thing....

This is BS, mainly because Wall Street has been on the Democrats’ side for years.

No, drive a stake through it until it is dead. Never leave a piece of trash for the political whores to continue it.

Why do people keep talking repeal? The Republicans do not have the numbers in Congress to repeal over a veto or even pass a repeal through the Senate.

All they CAN do right now is defund... that’s it.

Even the Dems are going to feel increasing pressure to repeal a totally unworkable law. It is "possible" that in the near future a "scandal" could so totally destroy the Dem Party reputation that more Dems would switch to Pubbie. There are hints of such a scandal, we shall see.

I honestly pray every day that a huge scandal breaks and brings the commie down. It's so depressing. I can't take another two years of this.

One can hope, but I keep hearing people talk like the newly elected Republicans can repeal Obamacare by themselves... they cannot. I fear part of that is the dems getting hopes up and later going “see the repubs did nothing”.

There are those of us are just expressing our opinion that we want it DOA. Drive a stake through it. There is nothing wrong with that. We just want make sure it will be gone period. Politicians have a bad habit of lying. They may defund it; but will they kill it completely when they have the numbers?
