'Sarah Palin's Alaska': The Most Expensive Campaign Commercial Ever?

Any remaining doubts that Sarah Palin is the most media savvy politician out there should have been erased entirely with last week's premiere of her new TLC show Sarah Palin's Alaska (SPAlaska!).

Back in March when rumors that Palin and producer Mark Burnett were shopping a reality show first surfaced speculation that the proposed series would be about Palin's family were quickly shot down. Two weeks ago during a spashy premiere party for the show, hosted by Discovery, the savvy team promoting the show insisted to attendees it would not be political. Of course, within minutes of last week's premiere, in which (blurred out) write Joe McGinniss -- who has rented out the house next door to the Palin's in order to research his new book -- featured prominently, both claims were quickly proven untrue. The show is nothing if not an extended political commericial for (decisive! adventurous!) Sarah Palin, starring her family members, each of whom get their own shout-out in the opening credits.

Conclusion? Essentially Palin has convinced TLC to pay her six figures every week to convince the country she is presidential material (making Mark Burnett her Karl Rove?). Or, at the very least, she possesses the kind of decisive backbone required to stun a Halibut with a billy club (part of last night's mother/daughter day with Bristol) and by extension her political opponents.

The result is apparently enough to convince Frank Rich that she has a shot at being President.

Thanks to the in-kind contribution of this “nonpolitical” series, Palin needn’t join standard-issue rivals like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Haley Barbour and Tim Pawlenty in groveling before donors and primary-state operatives to dutifully check all the boxes of a traditional Republican campaign. Palin not only has TLC in her camp but, better still, Murdoch.

And besides that, she can out-negotiate giant oil and gas companies and has a better grasp of monetary policy than virtually anyone in Washington (I think the WSJ thinks only Paul Ryan tops her in that domain).

John Thune’s South Dakota — Tours of ethanol plants and lectures on the virtues of farm subsidies. Co-starting Lisa Murkowski and Mark Kirk.

Mike Huckabee’s Arkansas — A diet and exercise show where Huckabee makes an impassioned plea for higher taxes to subsidize carrot sticks for the poor. The final episode would feature a special appearance by Michelle Obama.

Tim Pawlenty’s Minnesota — A Seinfeld inspired reality ‘show about nothing’ featuring T-PAW trying as hard as he can to make it through each episode without offending anyone.

Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts — Join Mitt Romney as he accompanies the elderly on their quest to find the last doctor left in MA. In the season finale, Mitt presides over the marriage of two lesbians in Boston and lends a needy underage girl the $50 for her abortion co-pay.

That was good as well. I also liked the bit with McGinniss when they were coming home from an outing. They’re out having fun and he’s sitting, reading a book.

Expensive?!! Apparently The author does not know about the Harry and Linda Bloodworth Thomson Clinton epic (which was repaid with illegal travel agency perks bestowed upon Harry).

Loved all the comments but Bristol talking about work ethic being passed down to the next generation was touching. It certainly has been evident from the comments that Mark Ballas had made about her that he has seen this attribute in the Pistol too. Can’t wait till tonights’ show.

Don't know about last night, but the 1st week was a records breaker at nearly 5 million viewers.

And now the bigger question. How does this translate into votes for the GOP Primaries. Seriously if she can get 5,000,000 people a week to tune in to an infomercial you have to figure she can get them to the polls during the primaries. McCain won the nomination in 2008 with 9,838,910 votes during the primaries. So 5,000,000 puts her half way there, if of course she can transform viewers into voters.

Glynnis is just jealous because Sarah Palin has GOP elephant socks and she doesn’t.

How many other candidates get a multi-hour campaign commercial, get a cable station to foot the bill, AND get a seven figure salary for filming it?

How many other candidates could produce something which is as genuinely interesting and fun to watch? FWIW, we upgraded our cable service specifically to see this series.

As for political remarks, this series has less of it than your average 30 minute M*A*S*H episode.

Ronaldus Magnus...the Tampico Tiger. That’s him. Been to his church in Dixon a number of times. The year before last, we had our Division 13 Kiwanis meetings there. Now they’re held at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

I watched the show again this weekend (thanks to the ping on FR I which reminded me)... I really like the show for what it is... an unvarished look at the Palins.

I can’t see her getting my vote in the caucus though...

Like Huckabee - she could get a talk show and do much better for the cause...

IMO, neither can win a Presidential election, and at this point I would put Romney in that group too.
