Solomon Ortiz Concedes to GOP Challenger (TX-27)
Roll Call ^ | 11/22/10 | Tricia Miller

Posted on 11/22/2010 6:54:15 PM PST by LdSentinal

Rep. Solomon Ortiz conceded to his Republican challenger Monday night, according to a regional representative of the National Republican Congressional Committee who is in Texas’ 27th district.

The Texas Democrat called challenger Blake Farenthold, a former radio talk-show host, as the last county in his district worked toward wrapping up its recount.

The Farenthold victory brings the net Republican House pickups this cycle to 62 seats, with four House races still outstanding from the midterm elections. The Republican was on Capitol Hill last week for freshman orientation.

Ortiz asked for the recount, which cost him $23,500, after the original unofficial count showed him down by 799 votes. Five of the district's six counties had finished by Friday, but Cameron County — which was also dealing with a recount in a county judge’s race — was still finishing recounting absentee and early ballots Monday evening. Officials there expected to certify the vote count Monday night.

A former chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the current chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, the 14-term Congressman had never gotten less than 55 percent in a re-election campaign. His races in 2006 and 2008 were among his closest: he won re-election with 57 percent in 2006 and with 58 percent in 2008.

Ortiz’s son, Democratic state Rep. Solomon Ortiz Jr., also lost Nov. 2. He represents Corpus Christi.

Ortiz made the political death blow of supporting Obama & Pelosi!!! Wait until 2012 when the Democrat Party really gets destroyed. Take heed House & Senate Democrats and look around the country at all the Democrat state politicians in Georgia and Alabama switching to the Pubbies!!! They are not dummies like you buffoons are. Obama, Pelosi & Reid are the kiss of death for Democrats and the Democrat Party. Love it!!! And....ladies and gentlmen, these Democrats were warned over and over again, dump & broom Obama, he is political poison!!! They did not listen!!! And....these “lame duck” Democrats best vote against anything Obama, Pelosi & Reid push if they any iota of a brain at all!!!

I never thought I would live long enough to see the day when a Republican was elected to Congress from Corpus Christi.

I'm wondering why you say that. 2006 was the last off-year election, and we must agree that 2006 was a Democrat wave year. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Senate), Rick Perry (R-Gov.) and David Dewhurst (R-Lt. Gov) are carried Corpus Christi's Neuces County.

In Neuces County, even many statewide down-ballot races -- which are good measures of party loyalty over candidate appeal -- went Republican in 2006 . These include Sharon Keller (R-Presiding Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals), Elizabeth Ames Jones (R-Railroad Commissioner) and Jerry Patterson (R-Land Commissioner)

Farenthold beat Ortiz 53-42 in Neuces County.

Vaden got more and more of the vote against ortiz each time he ran

2006: Ortiz beat Vaden 57-39
2008: Ortiz beat Vaden 58-38

Vaden performed worse the second time around.

We should all book a trip to King Ranch for a new pair of boots and swing by CC to the Aquarium and the USS Lexington and some nice seafood in support!

Make it new bus tour run, a day-trip.

Maybe rubber ducks can become Farenthold’s mascot. This is an important victory, nonetheless.

Go see the Lexington for sure then just buy a cheap rod and reel some dead shrimp and toss a line into Mustang Island surf

Seriously Ortiz loss is a big deal. Some voters woke up.

It is especially encouraging that Farenththold (R) defeated Ortiz (D) in a majority Hispanic district. Hispanics make up 68.1% of the population in TX-27 (Source).

No resting on our laurels - that’s what the RATS expect us to do, and they will try to paint the Tea Party as a one-hit wonder.

Right. We are just getting warmed up. Come on 2012!

I was talking to several political insiders at a meet and greet for all the the incoming TX legislators from the Coastal Bend. Ortiz gained about 200 votes in Cameron county, while Farenthold gained 50 for a final margin of 648 votes.

San Antonio Zoo is a jewel. Incredible landscaping, and you can see all the new vipers (30, mostly tiny) in TX that swam across in their herpetarium.

Corpus has some really great nurseries, coastal plants if your zone can support it. At the aquarium there is a ray and shark petting pool: they swim counter-clockwise and surface up for you to pet them as they go by.

Frenchy’s is gone, but I think Snoopy’s is still there. This is where you get a beer tray full of every fried seafood, and shoot some darts.

An Austinite who has a really big soft spot for Corpus :)

In Neuces County, even many statewide down-ballot races -- which are good measures of party loyalty over candidate appeal -- went Republican in 2006.

In 2006 Republicans picked up the Nueces County County Judge and Nueces County Sheriff positions.

In 2008 Republicans reelected the sheriff to a full 4 year term with about 60% of the vote, and we picked off of a seat on the County Commission Pct. 1 by 179 votes to give Republicans their first majority since Reconstruction.

In 2010 the Republican county judge got reelected with 62% of the vote! We also swept all the state house races in the county including Solomon Ortiz, Jr.'s seat. We also elected two Hispanic Republican judges.
