Partway into post I realized these were different situations.

I usually have to go through a search upon entry into the US because I'm connecting to SeaTac. But when I return to SeaTac and am not connecting, I get to board that special car on the train from South Terminal that dumps you on the public side of the exit to baggage claim.

Actually a bit clever on someone's part -- I commend the unknown person for that courtesy.
