Notable & Quotable (Obama to UNIONIZE TSA)
Notable & Quotable ^ | November 27-28, 2010 | John Fund

If you think [the Transportation Security Administration] is dysfunctional and unpopular now, wait until it unionizes. This month, the Federal Labor Relations Authority ruled that 50,000 TSA personnel will be allowed to vote on whether or not to join a union with full collective bargaining rights. The American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union are already gearing up their campaigns to win over the screeners.

After 9/11, Congress wisely decided to forbid TSA employees from coming under union work rules out of fear that it could compromise security. Imagine if every change in procedures had to be cleared with union shop stewards. While it is not easy to fire TSA personnel now, think you difficult it will be to remove bad employees if they are covered by union job protection agreements.

In 2007, the new Democratic Congress eliminated the ban on collective bargaining, and as soon as Barack Obama became president in 2009 his appointees began pushing unionization for TSA. Last year, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano admitted in Congressional testimony that she backs collective bargaining rights for TSA employees, overriding the considered judgment of all previous TSA administrators that such rights are at cross purposes with the flexibility TSA needs to meet certain threats.

Yes they need to unionize to protect themselves from the angry Americans who are clinging to their guns, religion, and...genitals.

“This month, the Federal Labor Relations Authority ruled that 50,000 TSA personnel will be allowed to vote on whether or not to join a union with full collective bargaining rights.”

Those voting NO will join the ranks of the unemployment line.

The problem with privitization is first, they will be stuck having to follow TSA procedures & second, they will be union companies.

SF opted out of TSA & the private firm they use is union.

Unionization is probably looking attractive to the TSOs now that they’re being slugged & verbally abused all day long.

Several unions have been chasing TSA employees for years—the timing of all this couldn’t be better for the unions.

I am surprised to see so little news on this unionizing attempt.

Is the US Supreme Court ASLEEP??? How can the Executive Branch keep making laws when that authority resides with the Legislative Branch? We do not have a king or a queen, though BO and Pelosi act as though we do.
Unionizing these high school dropouts will be a disaster and will further drain the already bankrupt US Treasury. The GOP needs to defund several entire departments if they are serious about cutting spending.

Excuse me, but didn’t the law that created the TSA also say they could never unionize? I’ll have to call John Mica’s office to find out since he was one of the authors of the bill.

It’s almost going to be impossible to dump the TSA. It is part of King Obama trek to making America a dictatorship with his own army of thugs.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

It is time.

"Stroke of the pen. Law of the land. Kinda cool." --Clinton presidential aide Paul Begala, July 1998

President Kennedy’s Executive Order 10998, allowing Federal unions, is what opened the door for public sector unions at the state and local level, which is leading to bankruptcy from bloated public sector salaries, benefits, and retirement plans. Businesses that offered plans like many governments have would go bankrupt. Gov’t entities will, too, eventually, but it will be much more painful.

This is why unions should again be outlawed for public employees.

All government unions should be banned. The idea that government workers need protection from guess who?? THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, is ridiculous. remember, teachers are government employees too. Ban government unions.

.

It’s just an easy way to build a civilian military, just as big, just as well equiped and just as well funded as our military establisment. Of course, nobody wants to talk about that. We need to put a stop to all of this crap.
