On a crisp November afternoon, people line the sidewalks of Baltimore Street and Steinwehr Avenue, waiting for the annual Remembrance Day Parade to begin.
Hundreds and hundreds of Civil War re-enactors somberly line up, unit upon unit, behind the town's high school to march the same path that President Abraham Lincoln traveled the day he delivered the Gettysburg Address.
The 14th Brooklyn, known as "The Red-Legged Devils" for their vivid red pantaloons, march proudly with other Union regiments, a healthy number of Confederate soldiers and members of a "U.S. Colored Troops" brigade.
Civil War historian Michael Kraus, a curator at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Pittsburgh and the military coordinator for the film "Gettysburg," says he never loses the thrill of following Lincoln's footsteps.
"I've been re-enacting since 1966," he says, explaining that re-enactors "not only learn history in a three-dimensional way, you can literally feel a part of it."
Most Civil War re-enactors who look forward to the pageantry of this day, he says, don't do so out of just a love of history but "also a profound love of country."
Down through the generations, profound love of country has rarely abated in America -- although we always have been at odds with anything remotely resembling a profound love of government.
Our temperament as a people -- we want to trust our government, to believe our leaders are doing the right thing -- has been shocked by successive traumas: the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the two wars that followed, the constant threat of terrorism, the invasions of our privacy and, most recently, crushing economic troubles.

I talked to a guy that did CW re-enactments. He said that it was amazing how soldiers who were “killed” in the battle managed to crawl into the shade before they died.
Yeah, well, those Civil War reenactors who played Confederate soldiers better never run for office against a democrat because they’ll use it against him/her. He/she’ll be flayed alive for having appeared in a uniform like that. They did it cuz they’re really a racist/Nazi at heart, is what they’ll say. That’s just what Marcy Kaptur and the left wing establishment did to Rich Iott in District 9 Ohio.
Interesting, so Casey “get’s it.”
Casey is an empty suit. The only reason he got elected was because of who his father was.
I find it interesting that when speculating on 2012, the pundits mention PA but don't really give all the data. Pennsylvania is a right of center swing state. For the last four years Spector has basically dominated Casey and I think the republicans have a real advantage in two years from now. I'm quite optimistic that if the republicans keep their disclipline they can take Casey out even if he votes with the republicans 100% next session. And I do believe Casey will vote with the republicans on everything important to us unless he has a political death wish.
No matter what, I think being a student of the voting habits of Senator Casey will be quite rewarding to us beginning in January.
And another thing, every chance I get, I mention that Casey is in trouble. That is, every chance I get to mention it on DU : )
Casey got into office on his father’s reputation.He is nothing but a lefty phony.
