PETER Jackson's troubled Hobbit project has become embroiled in a race row after a would-be extra was told she was too dark to play one of the pint-sized Tolkien creatures, reports said.
Briton Naz Humphreys, who has Pakistani heritage, attended a casting session in the New Zealand city of Hamilton last week, queueing for three hours only to be told her skin tone was not suitable, the Waikato Times reported.
"It's 2010 and I still can't believe I'm being discriminated against because I have brown skin," Humphreys told the newspaper.
"The casting manager basically said they weren't having anybody who wasn't pale-skinned."
The newspaper said video footage showed the casting manager telling people at the audition: "We are looking for light-skinned people. I'm not trying to be - whatever. It's just the brief. You've got to look like a hobbit."

Wait for the remake, if they could even summon the intellect to do it. They rewrote the Sum of All Fears such that Clancy walked away from it. Instead of islamics they had neo nazi’s. And nowhere were they helped by member of Amer. Indian Movement as Clancy had them do in his book. They believe they can rewrite reality. A black Atticus? Wouldn’t doubt it, but the courtroom scenes would be pretty hard to play out, considering it was supposed to be the 1920s.
We were on the same brain wave, re my comments on Atticus Finch. I was disgusted with hollyweirds rewrite as of course, Clancy was and walked off the project. They still had to pay him though.
Reminds me of a comment by US national rowing coach a while ago on the subject of whether we should have “heavyweight” women’s rowing team. He, in broken Polish accented English, said “ what is point? ... is like midget basketball...never going to see them dunk it”. LOL
I can't wait to see the remake of Little Orphan Annie featuring Whoopie in a red wig, and they can cast Joy Behar as Daddy Warbucks since we aren't bothering to worry about gender and the like any longer.
She could have auditioned for a role as an Orc.
Good point, and there’s a movie out right now called “For Colored Girls” and I don’t think any purple people are in it!
