The NYU College of Nursing is putting primary health care on wheels with the help of a $2.9 million grant from the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The money will go to the school's new Mobile Health Van Program, "Feeling Good in Your Neighborhood."
The community-based project is geared toward high school students from immigrant families whose health care needs have not been met.
"It is the outcome of the College of Nursing's dedication to provide school-based health care," associate dean of graduate programs at the College of Nursing Judith Haber said.
The program operates from a newly designed van, which is driven daily to several Brooklyn schools, including Brooklyn International High School, Prospect Heights International High School, Brooklyn School for Music and Theatre and Urban Assembly School of Music and Art to provide primary health care to students.
Equipped with nurse practitioners, registered nurses, nursing students, social workers and other professionals, the Mobile Health Van can see up to 20 students a day.
The Mobile Health Van Program hopes to improve the student's level of health literacy as well as provide health care. "It's designed to increase their savvy about the value of health care," Haber said.
The van follows a simple model: "Set-Up, Catch-Up, Hook-Up." "Set-up" refers to assessing the past health care and determining what the patients' present needs are, "catch-up" are the services provided by the van and "hook-up" involves preparing future health care visits.
Haber said the program has faced some challenges, especially with treating children. Parental consent is needed to admit a student into the program and is not always given.
"Believe it or not, when you have people who are immigrants, they often mistrust the health care system," she said. "They don't believe kids are covered, especially if they are illegal."

Your taxes at work....come to America illegally...get lotsa free stuff!
Nurses provide nursing, NOT health care. There is a big difference between a nurse and a trained medical diagnostician. The thought patterns that one learns are completely different.
That being said, I’m sure this is something that the College of Nursing really “feels” good about. Those poor, poor illegal invaders...
Typical liberal bull$hit.
Just to ask don’t nurse practitioners, have the same ability as if the real Dr was there to make medical diagnosis and write Rx’s ??
It’s a fine article you posted! Wait until these immigrant children are plyed with birth control pills which will be a central feature of this free health “care.” As far as the nurses doing the work of doctors, Americans know better and the immigrants will come to realize that their children are being targeted for substandard care.
