Sustainable communities are high-density communities where automobiles are discouraged, and bikeways and walkways are the alternative to public transportation.

A small tidbit from a small rural town near me: instead of just widening a rather well-used road out of town, the town and state used the project to install more water and sewer and extend their tenticles. Fair enough, that is their right. But they are also adding bike lanes on a rural road on which nobody in their right mind is going to ride a bicycle. We do get a few suicidal morons from the city on some of our rural roads, but even if they choose to ride on that stretch with bike lanes, they will end up on a suicidal road where the bike lanes end.
