Food Safety Bill Will Not Make Food Safer, Will Increase Food Costs and Budget Deficit
The Weekly Standard ^ | Nov 29, 2010 | Jim Prevor

Today, the Senate is likely to vote on the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010 (S510). But the bill is little more than an enormous grant of money and power to the Food and Drug Administration and a lot of reporting burdens imposed on the private sector. Those who favor a smaller, leaner government should oppose it.

Advocates for the bill point out that we need “change” as the food safety system is built mostly on laws passed over seventy years ago. They would like to transform the FDA from what they perceive as a mostly reactive agency – dealing with food safety after outbreaks occur – to a proactive agency that will safeguard the food supply.

However, as we have learned in other contexts, yearning for change begs the question of what change will actually be and what it would actually accomplish. In this case the food supply is so vast and the supply chain so complicated that there is no known or practical way the FDA can be an effective sentinel against all pathogens in the food supply.

Giving massive new powers to the government, rushing legislation in lame duck sessions, adding to the deficit – there is just no reason for these Republicans to be involved in all that. Obamacare already is set to give the government a stranglehold on our medical system. Do we have to give the government enhanced control over our food as well? Is too little government regulation over the food supply really the banner under which these Republicans wish to march?

Abolishing the FDA and returning control to the states would do more for food safety than this turkey of a bill increasing Federal control and growing the FDA into the TSA of food production.

The FDA needs this law to increase the size of their SWAT teams. Do you realize how many family sized dairies there are that need taking out by federal ninjas?

Apparently it is more about change than anything else. I hope everybody has emailed or called their respective Senators.

Anybody know who wrote this turkey?

If this will limit and reduce the import of food products from China - or make this poison easier to identify - I’m for it.

My understanding is that it was written by Monsanto. It does more to kill the small farmer and benefit Corporate Agriculture than anything yet devised.

Still does not permit widespread use of irradiation of food which would reduce spoilage and food poisoning.

I just called my Florida Senators and left my message telling them to vote no. Who knows what Nelson will do though. I’m wondering if they’re getting inundated with calls because it took a while to leave a msg for Nelson.

Yes, because it took a couple of tries to get through to Corker and Alexander this morning. Easier to get back through this afternoon though...another issue...Medicare.

Went to make a new patient appointment for me with my hubby’s ortho guy and got told my ‘disablility’ Medicare was not accepted by them. This did not compute, as it is accepted with our other health care providers. After a call to Corker’s office and talking to them, there is no difference in over 65 Medicare and those of us on ‘disability’ Medicare. SO it means docs are starting to REJECT new Medicare patients.

This made hubby upset and you don’t upset a ret. Senior Chief with out consequences..he called them back and canceled his April check up and said we’d take our business back to another ortho clinic we’ve both used. Hope they will see me. Obamanationcare has totally screwed up our health care.

Food safety?
Cost estimate (ha ha) is 1.4 billion of new spending.
Plan to hire 17,000 new government employees.
Less than 2/1000th of 1% of the population die from bad food.
