FULL TITLE: Smithsonian Christmas-Season Exhibit Features Ant-Covered Jesus, Naked Brothers Kissing, Genitalia, and Ellen DeGeneres Grabbing Her Breasts
The federally funded National Portrait Gallery, one of the museums of the Smithsonian Institution, is currently showing an exhibition that features images of an ant-covered Jesus, male genitals, naked brothers kissing, men in chains, Ellen DeGeneres grabbing her breasts, and a painting the Smithsonian itself describes in the show's catalog as "homoerotic."
This is an exhibition that displays masterpieces of American portraiture and we wanted to illustrate how questions of biography and identity went into the making of images that are canonical, David C. Ward, a National Portrait Gallery (NGP) historian who is also co-curator of the exhibit, told CNSNews.com.
A plaque fixed to the wall at the entrance to the exhibit says that the National Portrait Gallery is committed to showing how a major theme in American history has been the struggle for justice so that people and groups can claim their full inheritance in Americas promise of equality, inclusion, and social dignity. As Americas museum of national biography, the NPG is also vitally interested in the art of portrayal and how portraiture reflects our ideas about ourselves and others.
"These themes, historic and artistic, come together in 'Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,' the first major exhibition to examine the influence of gay and lesbian artists in creating modern American portraiture," says the plaque. "'Hide/Seek' chronicles how, as outsiders, gay and lesbian artists occupied a position that turned to their advantage, making essential contributions to both the art of portraiture and to the creation of modern American culture."
The Smithsonian Institution has an annual budget of $761 million, 65 percent of which comes from the federal government, according to Linda St. Thomas, the Smithsonian's chief spokesperson.

I was actually thinking of taking Sassy to the Smithsonian this month. Not now. I took all my older children yrs ago & they loved it. How utterly disgusting it has become. Sassy will be disappointed as she really wanted to go but when I tell her about this I think she will agree we don’t need to go there.
I have never been there but I think it’s a big place, pandy. You could take her and avoid the nonsense displays.
Yes it is very big & I will have to think about it. It really irks me to say this is art or whatever they call such garbage. I don’t want to fund it. If they are going to show garbage then let the kooks donate to keep the Smithsonian open. I don’t want my tax dollars paying for it.
Utter trash funding with my tax dollars. Just great, not only does NPR get funding, but now this.
DeGeneres is a disgusting fraud.
Try the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
I went there as a kid, (like 40+ years ago) and loved it.
As far as I know, they still have a huge model of the human heart that you can walk through, following the path that the blood takes.
There’s also Valley Forge as a historical site.
She’d still be supporting it by going, even if it were another building.
There are plenty of other places to go.
There’s the Museum of Natural History in NYC as well. I’ve been there recently and it’s incredible. There really are plenty of other options.

For any homeschoolers who were considering a trip to the Smithsonian, here's a look at what they're pushing now.
Good idea. Thanks!
And the Museum of Natural History in NYC doesn’t put on any objectionable exhibits?
I don’t have any idea.
I didn’t go through it all and don’t keep up with what’s going on there.
Just the tunnels or the bridge I would have to go over...lol. I can’t do the tunnels.
