State Department communications leaked by WikiLeaks show that eight months after President Obama signed the executive order to close the detention camps at Guantanamo Bay -- one of his first acts as president -- diplomats concluded that was a mission impossible.
In September 2009, with half of the remaining detainees being from Yemen, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan met with the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who suggested putting all of his countrymen in Yemeni prisons.
But in a later cable, a U.S. diplomat noted, "Saleh would, in our judgment, be unable to hold returning detainees in jail for any more than a matter of weeks before public pressure -- or the courts -- forced their release."
Proposals to send the Yemenis to a rehab center in their native country fell flat partly because of Yemeni demands for $11 million to fund it. After a video released in early 2009 showed a former detainees and Saudi rehab grad leading Al Qaeda in Yemen, new questions arose about whether detainees could be reformed.
At the State Department Tuesday, spokesman P.J. Crowley would not characterize the cables.

So this means when the GOP takes back the White House in 2012, the left-wing can’t pester the GOP to shut down Gitmo, right?
I’m normally not a betting man, but I’ve made some money off of liberal friends, when I bet them that Gitmo would still be open a year later.
Do you remember how the MSM and the left ranted and ranted about the inhumanity of Gitmo?
Do you remember the MSM sympathizing with leftists who demanded Gitmo be closed?
Remember how George W Bush was a war criminal in part because of Gitmo?
Remember how Obama constantly took Bush to task about closing Gitmo and said he would close it within his 1st year in ofice?
Where is the outrage demanding that this “un-American” establishment and world embarrassment be shut down?
Has anyone really heard a peep of outrage over Gitmo in the MSM since Obama set foot in office?
I thought not.
If a Republican is in the White House in 2013, the lamestream media will jump back in with attack articles full of outrage over Gitmo. They always find a way to prove "but that's different."
Remember how McCain vowed that he would close GITMO on Day 1 of his presidency.
Imagine how that would be going over — his Day 1 priority being a similar failure or those prisoners would be on US soil in US prisons now.
But,But,But....he Promised!!! BWWWWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
In fact, we can just air drop in occasional supplies for the "inmates" to fight over and, rather than having guards there, patrol the island 24x7 with predator drones.
Is that too harsh?
>> Do you remember how the MSM and the left ranted and ranted about the inhumanity of Gitmo?
If not that, then the homeless. Regardless of these difficult times, nobody’s homeless when the idols are in charge.
Leave Gitmo open to dump all gang-members and child molesters.
