It’s the old we’re doing something. Nothing will work as well, but this looks better since it causes the general public inconvenience.

Your statement is truer than you think.
This whole meth problem would go away if they wanted it to.
When pseudoephedrine was developed, there was 2 patents, filed, one for a molecule with a right hand rotation and one with a left hand rotation, i.e., mirror images. Both worked equally well as decongestants, with identical symptom relief. Now the zinger, it was found that the equipment for manufaturing the one could also produce methamphetimines with minor adjustments to the process. The other mirror image molecule was unsuitable for this process and it was decided that only the one we know as pheudoephedrine would be made, because the process could be dual purposed. If they really wanted to stop the proliferation of meth labs, they’d simply switch to the mirror image molecule that can’t be turned into meth.
