'I was Drunk': Passenger Drops Anchor of Moving Cruise Ship in the Middle of the Caribbean
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | December 1, 2010

Posted on 12/01/2010 4:33:12 PM PST by Cecily

A drunk cruise ship passenger has been arrested after dropping the anchor on a moving liner. Rick Ehlert, 44, went into a restricted area, put on work gloves and released the anchor of the 1,260-passenger ship in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, said the FBI. For good measure he also threw a life buoy overboard as the liner made its way from Costa Maya on the Caribbean coast of Mexico to Tampa, Florida. The sailing enthusiast is now in custody and faces charges of attempting to damage a vessel and endangering a ship's safe navigation. If found guilty he could have to pay a $250,000 (£160,000) fine and be imprisoned for up to 20 years.

I guess he's lucky his inebriated state didn't inspire him to do a cannonball dive into the ocean.

He sounds like more of a booze enthusiast than a sailing enthusiast.

Well, that can’t be good for the windlass. I wonder how much it costs to replace one of the size found on a cruise ship.

And how can this not be considered anything other than willful intent to do damage to a vessel, and endanger the lives of both crew and passengers?

20 years is a good start. I’d say hit him with both the $250,000 fine and 20 years. Forced prison gay sex can be very instructional - that will teach him the error of his ways in a language even he can understand.

I’d kick that guy’s ass just for having the captain order me on deck.

What an appalling and evil proposition. Do you also torture animals in your spare time?

Why would a sailing enthusiast go on a cruise ship? Would he just sail there?

For some reason, I’m reminded of the cruise-line commercial where the spokesman’s up on the bridge, sounding the whistle (too much), and the captain finally gets tired of it and orders him “Get out.”

Son, when the booze starts leading you into a potential 20 and 250 federal sentence...you have a drinking problem.

I’m evil?

A ship is under way (cruise ships travel at ~20 knots) - and this man, with intentional intent of injuring or possibly killing every other passenger - intentionally and with knowledge drops the anchor, for nothing more than a ‘kick’? When you drop an anchor of a ship with a displacment in the neighborhood of 70,000 tons, moving at ~20 knots - what do you suppose happens? Do you suppose someone might get hurt? Do you suppose you might tear the hull and flood some compartments? Do you suppose someone might be tossed overboard - there are A LOT of people on the upper decks. Do you suppose someone might take a header off the Atrium?

Perhaps you don’t care for your life, or the live’s of others. I care more about the welfare of the squirrel in my neighbor’s oak tree far more than I care about this idiot. You see, my neighbor’s squirrel has no desire to cause me or my family harm. This idiot, intentionally attempted to cause harm to over a thousand people - for a thrill.

If it were permissible to boil him in oil, soak him in acid ... you bet I’d do it. Personally, if I had my way - I’t take the ship out about 20 miles and toss him over board - after I chummed the waters.

If you want to coddle your drunk drivers, gang bangers, terrorists and people who willfully endanger the lives and welfare of the public at large - I submit that you are the pervert.
