Until vertabrae are broken in full view of the upcoming generation, there can be no association of punishment with crime.
Case in point: the last public execution carried out in the county in which I live was done in 1903. It was 1926 before the NEXT murder was committed within the county, ie. one half generation passed before the next murder occurred.
The state then moved all capital punishment to Central Prison instead of allowing those sentences be executed in public before the residents of the area in which the crime was committed. What that has effected is no association with the crime to an execution done miles and years later.
That’s my opinion based upon the historical evidence.

What's even more important to realize is that the timing of his comments wasn't a mere coincidence, either. They were made very shortly after a number of media reports were issued in which it was announced that Hispanics had just surpassed "African-Americans" as the largest minority group in the U.S.
What has changed here -- and it was reflected in Cosby's frustration -- is the stark realization that "African-Americans" as a political force aren't going to be pandered to anymore . . . even by Democrats.

Very good comments on the thread. The victim was walking home from his job, and left behind family and friends who cared about him. The freaking disgusting feral slime subhumans who killed him should all be executed. Unfortunately far too few slime subhumans who should be executed are, and only after years of being maintained at our expense. And one of the more stupid and unconstitutional decisions of SCOTUS was to prevent states from executed criminals who are under 18 when they embark on their life of (what should be) capital crime.
This is a perfect example of what happens when families and religious principle based moral absolutes are destroyed. Barbarians - not at the gates, but in your city, every city and town. And sometimes, despite parents' best efforts, in their own families (especially after kids attending public school and leftist universities, are influenced by mainstream media and "entertainment", bad association with other kids whose parents don't raise them properly, get on drugs, etc).
Another important point is that for feral subhuman slime, and wannabe feral subhuman slime, punishment - severe, swift, and painful - is the only deterrent. Public executions, and no 20 years on death row, and public canings would do wonders for the crime rate.

But we been foolin ourselves for decades, thinkin if we just give em foodstamps, earned income tax credits, school lunches, section 8 housing, public housing, medicare, SSI for the really dull ones, affirmative action jobs, easy high school and even college diplomas, promotions on jobs, etc.-—that that what is, isn’t and vice versa.
So much of the work I did before I was 18 would be forbidden to me were I that age today because it is 'dangerous', from farm work to heavy construction. In those days, if you were big enough to do the job or responsible enough, you got the job--I never did work for minimum wage--always more. Now kids can't even run a french fry machine.
Executions need to start happening. Feral subhumans like these are not fixable.
