Full House Votes On Rangel Censure Today
December 2, 2010 12:12 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The once powerful Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel lobbied colleagues against long odds Thursday in an effort to receive punishment milder than censure by the House for ethical misconduct.
A half-dozen supporters spoke on Rangels behalf at a closed-door Democratic meeting hours before the House was to discipline the New York Democrat for financial and fundraising misconduct. But Rangel would need to overcome the 9-1 vote for censure from an ethics panel that has five members from each party.
I think its important for members on both sides of the aisle to support the work of the committee, said Republican Rep. John Boehner, who will become the House speaker in January.
Nonetheless, Rangel backers were pushing for an initial vote on a reprimand instead of censure.
If the House votes for censure as expected, Rangel will have to walk to the front of the chamber and stand before his colleagues while Speaker Nancy Pelosi in one of her most solemn duties reads him the censure resolution.

I am truly sorry for mistakes and would like your help in seeing that I am treated fairly, he wrote.
Rangel said he posted arguments for a reprimand on his website, which shows that the recommendation for censure is excessive and that my lapses do not rise to the level of transgressions of those censured in the past.

Good TV. What if tax-cheat Charlie doesn't show up?
stop or we’ll say stop again.
And then - "The Comfy Chair". No one wants "The Comfy Chair". How much more can Charlie be punished, the poor soul?
He keeps his seat, he keeps his pension, he loses his committee positions - so what? What punishment is "Censure" really? He isn't even considered the equivalent of a convicted felon like someone dishonorably discharged from the military.
If he were treated Justly he would be expelled and locked up for tax fraud.
For punishment, Charlie will chop down the mightiest tree in the forest ... with a herring!
Nancy already gave him a “Get out of Jail Free” card.
On CSpan now...
My cable locked up. All I have is a full screen still of Nadler. Anything good yet?
Gee, that sounds the same as almost every felon or NFL, NBA player after being caught. Please don't cut off my gravy train! Pleeeeeeeese. I'll be good. Honest...
I only saw some of Rangel’s very unrepentant speech; he was only sorry that he put some of his fellow congress critters through on making their decision. Pathetic and with a smattering of applause yet.
Congress voted for censure...300 and something to 70 something...so there was a large majority of dems who voted for censure too...good for them!
