Nearly 50 workers in South St. Paul lost their jobs Wednesday as a result of stepped-up workplace audits by the federal government trying to ferret out undocumented workers. The union that represents the workers, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1189, is protesting the Department of Homeland Security's enforcement strategy, saying the federal government is going after well-paid, taxpaying meatpackers, janitors and factory workers instead of targeting criminals and "bad actor" employers. Wednesday was the last day of work for those who process hides for Twin City Hide who could not provide documentation of their legal status to work. Another union, Service Employees International Unions Local 26, which represented 1,200 janitorial workers in the Twin Cities who lost their jobs about a year ago as a result of audits carried out by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also spoke out against the audits.

The unions claim to represent their members. OK - fine the unions as well as the employers.
WELCOME TO FREE REPUBLIC’S MINNESOTA PING LIST!
146 MEMBERS AND GROWING...!
FREEPMAIL ME IF YOU WANT ON OR OFF THIS LIST!
Wow, I used to work down the street from this place. The Stock yards, rendering plant, and tannery formed a triangle around our building. It didn’t matter which way the wind was blowing the place always smelled bad.
Not super surprised that these places have a high illegal count, just surprised that in the People’s Republic of Minnesota that they would do anything about it. Now y’all come on down to Texas and go into the Fort Worth Stock Yard and do the same thing please.
I dare say, if they were hiring there would be applicants. Just look at how many, what? 100,000 applicants Delta had for 1000 positions just a couple of days ago.
“Most of the workers who lost their jobs are Mexican nationals who at one time had work visas that have since expired. The workers had jobs that paid $12 to $14 per hour, health insurance and a 401(k) plan.”
Now, wait just a minute! This doesn’t seem to me like jobs that Americans won’t do!
If they’re ever actually deported, they’ll be back next month.
hopefully the employer gets fined, too AND the union.
Rewrite!
"Nearly 50 jobs in South St. Paul became available to American citizens and legal immigrants Wednesday...."
I am sure that unemployed legal American citizens would love them.
How about the unemployment offices in Minnesota send the unemployed to this business. They’ll be looking to fill hundreds of jobs once the illegals are let go.
Of course, it won’t happen. Just dreaming.
So only certain criminals should be targeted according to the Union Thugs...
unhhh... they _are_ criminals.
Ping!
They are not "undocumented workers" - they are ILLEGAL ALIENS! Calling them undocumented workers is like calling shoplifting an undocumented purchase.
“saying the federal government is going after well-paid, taxpaying meatpackers, janitors and factory workers instead of targeting criminals and “bad actor” employers”

If any of them used stolen SS numbers.... Then they would qualify as criminals.
But, that’s now supposed to be ignored like California Nicky’s case.
Secretly, I’m sure the union is tickled pink that the 50 illegals got booted.
Now the union can put in 100 legal workers to do the job that the 50 did before...
Our communist ran unions need to be disbanned.
Amerika
Spent the night in Amarillo one night 34 years ago. I was driving cross-country with my brother who was due to report to Camp Pendelton (5th. Marines). Whoa! I can still remember the smell!
Great! Now I know where I can go get a job! Thanks for the heads up.
I won’t join the union though. Wonder if I can get away with that. Cows can’t be worse than pigs so I know what I am getting in to.
