Police have made an arrest in the crossbow slaying of a man in a library in Toronto's east end.
The shooting happened at about 4:30 p.m. ET Thursday at the Main Street Library, just south of Gerrard Street East, Toronto police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck down by a crossbow projectile known as a bolt, police told CBC News. A bolt is shorter than an arrow but can be much heavier.
Witnesses told CBC's Jermaine Hylton they saw two men approach the man, who was sitting on a bench, and then pepper-spray him. He was then shot, either in the face or the back, witnesses said.
Police officers saw a man run north on Main Street after the shooting. He jumped into a U-Haul rental truck and drove off, police said.
Police tracked the truck, found it in the east-end Scarborough district and arrested the driver.
"It's still unclear exactly what sparked this incident. The motivation behind this killing is certainly a major factor here," said Const. Tony Vella.

Not sure that it's *that* much heavier, but I remember playing with my crossbows at an archery range on a couple of occasions, when the archers and I fired simultaneously, there was a *thwack* of my bolts a perceptible interval of time before their arrows did. My bolts usually sunk in the targets up to the fletching, where theirs did not. More a 'muzzle velocity' thing maybe?
Great idea - a U-HAUL rental truck for a gitaway!
Crossbow and U-Haul rental truck? An odd combination. You’d expect him to ride in on horseback wearing a green Robin Hood outfit, at the very least.
I have a feeling the weirdness factor surrounding this case is just the beginning.
This sounds like a premeditated hit, although conducted in an unusual manner. They aren’t going to find the motive in the library... two guys come in with pepper spray and a crossbow... they know who they’re looking for.
I think the butler did it with a lead pipe in the den.
Even from a 50 lb draw weight bow, a broadhead tipped arrow will shoot completely through a deer longways (in chest, out the rear) Broadside shots are almost always through and through.
If crossbow bolts are well matched as to broadhead size, they should do as well or better than a regular arrow.
Quite. The crossbow was a game-changer in the middle ages. A crossbow bolt can easily penetrate plate armor, where a longbow arrow might not. In fact, there was a time when the talking heads of the time believed that the crossbow was so effective that it would "make war obsolete". So much for that... :-)
LOL! I have a quote from an ancient somewhere, who felt that every military development that could be made had been. That was around the time of Christ, plus or minus a century.
I had a Barnett Panzer and a Barnett Thunderbolt. The Panzer wasn’t as powerful- but it was split-your-own-bolts accurate. I miss the thing.
