All students deserve access to higher education and a prosperous future, regardless of their immigration status. Federal legislation that would permit young illegal immigrants to gain legal status and ultimately citizenship if they go to college or serve in the military is in California's and the country's best interest.
The reasons to support the DREAM Act are moral, pragmatic and economic. Young people go where their parents take them, and it is unjust to punish them for being brought into the country illegally.
It has been widely reported that Reid's amended version would make students ineligible for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities. Were that the case, we would balk at supporting the legislation.
Negotiations are continuing. We hope the final product is strong legislation that serves to integrate the 65,000 illegal immigrants who graduate high school every year in the United States into the country they call home.

This isn’t about education, it is about a rolling amnesty for at least 3 million people.
SURE....as long as NO one who came here ILLEGALLY EVER GETS TO VOTE.....to VOTE they have to go back home and do it the LEgAL way!
No they don't. Period.
Only if they EARN it. The invaders can start earning it by being legal. Otherwise get them the hell out.
Why should we owe a college education to anyone who can sneak across the border?
Lawbreakers don’t deserve anything except a trip to le hoosegow (and subsequent deportation).
All students deserve access to higher education and a prosperous future, regardless of their immigration status.
Let these illegal aliens get their education in their home country.Don’t expect the American People to pay increased Property and Income taxes to benefit them at the cost of our own children.
Dream on Klingons!!!!
The provisions in the legislation do not matter. Leftist states will blatantly disregard the legislation. The 1996 immigration law had clear language prohibiting instate tuition for illegal aliens unless out of state students received the same treatment. Yet a number of states have blatantly disregarded this provision of the law. Incredibly, the California state supreme court ruled that its state law providing in state tuition to illegal aliens did not violate the provisions of the 1996 federal law.
The only way that provisions in the federal law will have any meaning is if Congress grants individuals standing in federal court to challenge state provisions in conflict with federal law. Neither Republican or Democrat administrations will challenge states who willfully disregard restrictions in federal immigration law on benefits for illegal aliens.
Why can’t they take this argument to a third world country to see how far it will get them? There are far more uneducated people in the world than there are geniuses. There happens to be a concentration of college-educated people in America, but the value of a college degree is decreasing over time. That’s what happens when EVERYONE has them.
Go to Venezuela and petition for free education. My taxes are paying for too much BS already!
Baaaarf!!!
Oh really...
This argument is so ridiculous its laughable. Just ask those who live out of state who want in-state tuition rates. Thus the entire premise is wrong ...let alone the ILLEGAL question.
You know that IF this were to become law (I'm still nervous that it will), it will breed an entirely new collegiate major - "Hispanic Studies," which of course will be mandated to be taught only by La Raza advocates (think of who teaches "Black American Studies" in our colleges and universities today), and will spend four years (funded by OUR tax dollars) convincing illegals (who risked their lives to get OUT of Mexico) that the United States is evil and Mexico is nirvana on earth.
Why do they "deserve" it? What did they do to "deserve" it? This is a pretty dumbass statement. If we are going to waste billions of tax dollars indoctrinating the young, let's at least waste them on American kids.
I’m so glad no one takes the LA Times seriously anymore.
Or,
I’m seriously glad that no one takes the LA Times anymore.
Either way works!

So the American Taxpayer should pay for the college education of every student in the world.
“Also, students who become “non-immigrants” under the act’s provisions wouldn’t be allowed to sponsor relatives to enter the country until 10 years have passed.”
Why would they EVER be allowed to sponsor relatives?
“to higher education and a prosperous future”
So they still believe a college degree, any degree, will provide a prosperous future? If we don’t control illegal immigration there will be no prosperous future for anyone.
