I went to an airshow many moons ago and had the amazing thrill of seeing Bob Hoover do a slow roll of an Aero Commander, with one engine feathered, along the runway at about 300 feet altitude.

Never knew those birds were certified as aerobatic until then.

My older brother had similar stories, flying OH-58s over (then) West Germany.

One day he was “buzzed” by a couple of Luftwaffe Phantoms. Scared the kaka out of him! ;)

I had 3 A-10 Thunderbolts fly over the me on the highway a few years back. They were definately under 1000 feet and it was an awesome sight!

I have a place on the White Oak River near Swansboro, NC. It is common when I am there. The "Hogs" come over at treetop level, and scream as they go past in training. Cherry Point and New River are separated by me... But, you don't hear them coming!

“AGL, MSL or Absolute 1000 feet. These guys did a great flyover at whatever 1000 foot number they needed. Get over it you sandcrab whiners.”

It doesn't matter if they were at 10,000 AGL. This is a serious charge, and the University of Iowa should permanently shut down their entire sports program as a result.

Airshows are allowed to obtain an FAA waiver to some of the FAR’s (Federal Air Regulations)

Ramstein AB, Germany, 1988. But in that incident the Italians were overflying the crowd. At US airshows aircraft don’t overfly the crowd at less than 1000 ft above the ground.

The F16 pilots from the VT ANG do flyovers for sporting events in New England including opening day at Fenway in 2008. See if you can tell which pilot got in trouble.

Now THAT was low. That second F-18 was real close to causing a disaster.

I was at the Columbine high school memorial service. During the service we had a flyover in the missing man formation.
The plane that came around behind and over the crowd was quite low and screaming. Something I will never forget (and I doubt there was a pair of clean shorts in the entire crowd).

The planes are amazing machines when they fly over low and fast! (Of course amazing any time, just we ground limited people dont get to see them in action often enough). I think 1000 ft is a stupid rule. If the plane is going to crash at an inopportune time, is there really a difference between 900 and 1100 feet?

"The T-38C model with upgraded cockpit is still the USAF the trainer in use. they have about 400 still in service."

400? Wow. I had no idea. Another poster mentioned that some are even in private ownership. I wonder if they have an ample supply of spares through after-market manufacturers or old stock, or if they have to cannibalize.

Saw the traffic at Love Field in Dallas come to a screeching halt one day when a B-17 came in. As the pilot hit the brakes, he said if you turn to the left, you will see one of the defenders of our freedom.

Thankfully I had a window seat on the left side. :)

Back in the 80’s a pair of Nat.Guard F-4’s blew threw a tight mt. valley while I was standing on top a silo elevator about 200’ above the river. They were parallel to me as they screamed past about 500’ away.

A very impressive pant cleaning event.

At Jimmy Stewart's 75th birthday celebration, then-President Reagan called in, and the call was placed over a PA system for the crowd to hear.

Reagan asserted his privilege as CinC to order Retired BG Stewart to look to his west, at which time a flight of A7s came roaring over the horizon...at what had to be substantially less than 1000 feet.

And indeed, it was the Sound of Freedom.
