McConnell: 'Don't ask, don't tell' debate will be pushed to 2011

Senate debate over repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy will have to wait until next year, Minority Leader Mitch McConnel predicted on Sunday.

Appearing on NBC’s "Meet the Press," he noted that there are other controversial measures beyond allowing gays to serve openly in the military, including questions about abortions in military hospitals, embedded in the larger defense authorization bill. And he said such a massive bill typically takes two weeks for the Senate to advance, even when it’s not chock-full of thorny issues.

“I don’t see how we can possibly finish the defense authorization bill, a two-week bill, wholly aside from these controversial items that are in it … before the end of the year,” he said.

McConnell, however, declined to venture a prediction on the outcome of the "don’t ask, don't tell" debate.

“My personal view is that Sen. [John] McCain is correct on this,” McConnell said of the Arizona Republican. “I intend to follow his lead. We’ll find out when we finally get around to debating this bill, which I think will not be before the end of this year.”

Here’s an idea, Mitch...why don’t we quit wasting time on this BS? We are facing bigger issues in this country...let the whiny 2%’ers pound sand...or whatever else they have available.

Why don’t we start calling this the Obama/Democrat tax hike on small businesses? What do you think will happen to payrolls when small business owners get hit with the Obama tax HIKE in January? Hmmm..?

Ballplayer is right..everything is staying the same. Not good.

The Bush tax cuts will be extended for all.

That really doesn't help, though...taxes need to be slashed; spending needs to be slashed, and it needs to be done NOW!

Yeah and The DEBT will be Increased with the extension of unemployment Benefits. Tax rate will remain the Same as they have been for the past ten years. The Republicans Gain Nothing, the Election was supposed to be abour Repealing Pbamacare ,CUTTING taxes and Reducing Spending. No Taxes have been CUT,the rates remain the same and the Debt INCREASES. NOTHING CHANGES ,it only gets worse

It helps alot. Small business owners need to know there will be no hike in their taxes. They will not hire anyone if their taxes escalate. IT IS HUGE.

And McConnell deserves some applause.

Most often I find Mich Mconnell a career politician. But in this I agree with him.most often I find Senator McCain acts contrary to how I would-but I have no doubt as to his Patriotism. And in this fight -he is saying the right things and deserves our support. When he is wrong— we can tell him
but whenhe is right he has earned our support.

“Ballplayer is right..everything is staying the same. Not good.”

First, Holy Moly, it’s a lame-duck session. Newly elected congressmen haven’t even taken office.

Second, Obama is losing on the tax-cut extension, something he would not have done if the November elections had gone his way.

Third, it appears that the Republicans will stall the Dream Act until next year, when it will never pass the House. This is a big win, and a win that would not have occurred if the November elections had gone Obama’s way.

Fourth, it appears that the Republicans will stall DADT until next year, when it will never pass the House, which would not have occurred if the November elections had gone Obama’s way.

As for reductions in spending (another really big item), we’ll have to see what happens next year. If we keep pressure on the Republicans and a few scared Democrats, progress may even be made on this issue. If we don’t keep up the pressure, we will have ourselves to blame.

“Wrong. The Republicans stood against Obaam’s TAX HIKES....The Bush tax cuts will be extended for all.”

Agreed. You cannot “tax yourself into prosperity.” The homosexual issue should die. Either they should maintain DADT or go back to pre-DADT. I personlly don’t have a problem with them extending unemployment. Obviously, this cannot go on indefinitely, but we need to get the economy turned around.

Hey, the best way I can think of to make some cuts in government is to get rid of Generals and Admirals that have publically endorsed repealing DADT....and then don’t replace them. There are entirely too many high ranking military officers that apparently have no other purpose but to push this kind of social engineering & PC nonsense. These aren’t “warfighters” they are bureaucrats.

I hope Mitch is right. got an e-mail form Senator Michael Bennett today saying in part I believe th ePolicy of DADT weakens Morale and prevents genuine unit cohesion by infringing on the right of individuals.
Discharging valuable well performing service members on the basis of sexual orientation is unfair and wrong.” I wrote back asking what good was that fancy Yale degree— he still knows NOTHING about the Military lifestyle— and NOTHING of the homosexual lifestyle. his personal beliefs are based upon some queer data that does not reconcile with what the Pentagon has documented as true.I would love to see the Yalee try to debate a real leader like Alan West on this subject. But Bennett would chicken out, hide in the closet.
