This is the kind of thing which causes the rest of the world to wet their pants in laughter at the idiot Americans.

NO terrorist attack could cause as much damage to our country as we cause ourselves by this lily-livered, panicked over reaction.

And a reply in advance to any Freeper who suggests that this is a "dry run"....You, sir, are a pansy, and an idiot.

Seems logical that the authorities would have handled this pretty carefully. Not exactly a common place event for someone to glue a toy robot to a cement base.

I think you're being too hard on them. Yeah, it's funny now that it turned out to be nothing. We'd have been lauding them as heroes if it had turned out to be something.

“Cemented in”?????

OK, I can see someone maybe using some 5 minute epoxy or superglue, but cement? I think someone might notice when someone brings in a sack of quickcrete, a bucket of water etc in and start mixing it up.

Mixed emotions on this. Geocachers are well aware of the risks of hiding a cache, especially near a bridge, tunnel or public place. Plus when people see you snooping around with a GPS looking for a cache they tend to get nervous.

Tragic that it has come to that.

Then again look at the FPV RC controlled videos going around now. FPV RC planes have a decent range. One could put some plastic explosive in one and do a lot of damage.

There are regs in the works that will limit not just FPV but most likely ALL RC vehicles, especially planes.

The terrorists are winning.

bringing to an end the hours-long standoff between police and the approximately eight-inch tall figurine.

They should have yelled "Klaatu Berada Nikto" at it. Would have saved a lot of time.

Let’s lighten up on these Cops, shall we?

It’s easy to armchair quarterback this from afar, but if you were the law enforcement person responsible for dealing with this I suggest your opinion might be much different.

Oregon is wrapping up a trial of two men right now who are accused of planting a bomb near a bank two years ago that killed 2 police officers, maimed a third and a bank employee. The bomb exploded in the bank after the police had brought it inside to examine it. They didn’t think it was a real explosive device and it detonated while they were trying to pry the lid open.

These days you cannot tell what some maniac has thought up to try and injure people, and “cementing” an object of any kind onto the base of a bridge should trigger a response by law enforcement. This toy could have easily been packed with explosives. Remember the toner cartridges that were found to be full of PETN? How hard would it be to do the same thing with an object like this one?

I’m glad it turned out to be a false alarm. It could easily have been otherwise.

This is mild. A few weeks ago I finished a cyclocross race in very muddy conditions. I got back to my car, loaded the bike, and changed my shoes. The shoes that I raced in had a lot of mud accumulated on them, so I hit the pavement with the shoes to knock off much of the mud. Then I got told that I was intimidating people by doing such a violent act. This is in Pansysota. The people here would be absolutely terrorized if they were around a bunch of construction carpenters at work!
