WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans now favor Republicans over Democrats on handling critical issues like the economy, taxes, terrorism and the budget deficit, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

One month after a sweeping Republican victory in congressional elections, public confidence in Democrats has plummeted from a year ago on the issues that matter most, the survey found.

"Republicans have really recovered from their post-election 2008 low and now have a very strong lead on the issues that are most important to the American people -- the economy, taxes, the deficit," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said.

"Republicans are positioning themselves well heading into the 2012 presidential campaign," she said.

The poll also found Americans were slightly more pessimistic about the future but their views of President Barack Obama held steady after last month's Republican gains.

Republicans picked up 63 seats in the November 2 election to win a majority in the House of Representatives and gained six Senate seats in a result Obama termed "a shellacking."

The survey found the number of Americans who believed the country was headed in the right direction fell 4 percentage points since late October, from 33 percent to 29 percent.

Obama's job approval rating held steady at 45 percent during the same period, while the percentage of voters who disapproved fell 5 points from 51 percent to 46 percent.

I see, now they are reporting on Mitt and Huck’s favorability but there seems to be an embargo on Palin’s number. Must be she’s doing better!

Egads, we need her now! We don’t need Barry or Mitt or Huck in ‘12!

(And yes, we do need to hear more substantive discussions of foreign policy from her, as from any candidate, once she declares.)

My personal favorite is DeMint—but I don’t think any of those four are getting elected.

I tell ya, I want to see two things from Palin, but I really believe she’s the best candidate we could hope for:

1) I want to hear her speak with authority on foreign affairs, and

2) I want her to articulate a strong, forthright position on illegal immigration.
