A joint U.S.-Japanese military exercise in the Sea of Japan was suspended when two Russian Il-38 May anti-submarine aircraft flew over the area, the NHK channel said on Wednesday citing the Japanese defense ministry.

The biennial Keen Sword drills were suspended amid fears that the Russian aircraft may obtain top-secret data, the channel reported.

Around 34,000 Japanese military personnel with 40 warships and 250 aircraft joined more than 10,000 U.S. troops with 20 warships and 150 aircraft in the drills in the Sea of Japan, off the southern island of Okinawa.

The agenda of the exercises, which will continue until December 10, include integrated air and missile defense, base security, close-air support, live-fire drills, maritime defense and search and rescue missions.

And Russia is a prime suspect, just slightly less likely than China, to have built NK centrifuge complex.

When they do this again , it would be a great time to train the cooks how to fly low cost UAV’s.

Jets my ass!

That is a turbo-prop aircraft, more or less a counter part to the P-3 Orion.

If that as a “jet aircraft”, then a lot of herc drivers are jet jockeys!

Looks remarkably like a P-3 Orion? Wonder why.

What Reagan would have done- authorize F-18s to blow by the IL 38 and “convince” them to leave. A supersonic fly by could screw up their 4 banger prop in a big way. They have no business in our airspace. Course we do, or at least did pester the soviets back in the day. Check out the bumping incident in the Black Sea. Freaked out the Sovs we were in their pond.

They are jet engines, but they swing geared-down props, unlike a pure jet. In a former life I worked for a company whose plane was a Gulfstream One. The first Gulfstreams were not pure jets; this one had two big old Rolls Royce jet engines swinging a pair of big four-bladed props. I had the good fortune to fly on it a number of times when we went to visit vendors. We flew out of Capital City Airport near Harrisburg, PA where the company’s hangar was located. Our chief pilot was an old B-17 pilot from WWII. On climb-out that sucker would go almost straight up! Cruised at around 340 indicated. Great airplane. I think all subsequent G-streams were pure jets. Great memories for an old fart!

Actually, I'd think this was international airspace.

Why? The kooks come out automagically, all flying something ;).

Believe me, the airspace over a US carrier group is OUR airspace. They saw this guy coming, and chickened out. Electronically speaking, when they shut down, he got nothing. Point should be made as they do with us buzzing them. Used to happen in 80s a lot. Still does in the subs, but these ops are never revealed, rarely a bumping episode. Russians are trying to appear important on their re build out of their fleet. And this was also to “show” the chinee what’s what.

I have a photograph of one buzzing close by about 200 yards away at 200 ft - one of two I saw during the KAL search.

That Russian plane does NOT look even remotely intimidating. Weak.

Light-up this sucker with multiple fire control radars and Mr. Pilot will get the message very quickly. Make sure the CIWS and SeaRAM are locked-on and tracking. Aviators find this quite unnerving.

Over international waters the airspace belongs to everyone. Cat and mouse is SOP.

Russian planes fly over U.S. naval ships
