Democratic strategist Bob Shrum defends President Obama compromising on extending the Bush-era tax cuts.
Shrum calls the bill a "second stimulus."

I can see tax cuts creating jobs...for small and corporate businesses...but unemployment benefits? I’m a bit confused on that one.
Why is anyone quoting anything that Schrum has to say (not a dig at you, CC27, just that the media quotes him...)?
He is a failure at any thing he has done politically...a total boob in politics...
Wait, then let the dims listen to him....
Never mind....
Schrum is a boob.
How many campaigns has he managed to lose ?
5 -6 -7 ?
Really? Is that your WAG?
The rates will stay the same as they have been for years.
We are currently at near 10% unemployment.
What changed that will have an effect on unemployment?
You willing to hang your hat on that?
If Bob “0-8” Shrum says it, we can bank on it... oh, wait...
unemployed people spend money they wouldn’t have had otherwise, increasing demand for products and services.
Will not one newsie call them on this???
don’t touch that number without rubber gloves...... he pulled it right out of his butt
This is not a tax cut, the rates stay the same.
Massive deficit spending to pay people not to work does not create jobs.
Schrum seems to be kind of a loon.

But would almost certainly be spending it on the same things they spend it on already. Primarily non-discretionary goods. (food, rent, gas). This creates no increase in demand, it merely sustains the current demand. Thus, while it may help unemployment from rising, I don't see it helping unemployment fall. Same with the tax "cuts". These "cuts" merely maintain the status quo. So if the current rate isn't creating additional jobs how would keeping it in place magically start doing so. Especially if it's only guaranteed for two years. I concede that had we let them go up it would have certainly made things worse but just keeing it as it is doesn't seem likely to suddenly make things a whole lot better. A least that's how it looks to this admitted non economist.
It has not worked to date and has never worked in the history of this country. All that it does is to create debt and the interest that debt accrues... and WE get to pay it all off... or default... which is where America is going... at 500MPH!

Shrum calls the bill a "second stimulus."
Shrummie, ol' buddy, ol' pal, it's NOT a "tax cut". It changes nothing from the status quo -- which is almost 10% unemployment.
Now, if you want to argue that extension of the current rates saved 7 million jobs that would've been lost had no action been taken, you might have a point.
Some "stimulus"...
Opened my SS statement for 2011 today, it is $214.32 LESS than I received in 2010...so all us old geezers are going to be doing a lot less buying in 2011.
I was not offering an opinion on the merits of that kind of government spending as stimulus. I was explaining the logic behind it.
Unemployment benefits create job? Shrum are you channeling Keiff Offalman or Nasty Peelousy?
This chapter of IdiotNomics goes right up there with “doing jobs Americans won’t do” and “Free Trade with Communist China creates jobs in the USA” as the most idiot comments about the economy
More IdiotNomics from our government
1. There are no tax cuts
2. Unemployment checks have never created a single job.
