The end of the year -- and the expiration date for a Treasury grant program that buoyed the renewable energy industry during the economic slowdown -- is just around the corner, and solar and wind power leaders are bracing for the blow.
A one-year extension proposed by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus was shot down over the weekend. This week’s tax agreement between President Obama and congressional Republicans doesn’t include a lifeline for the Treasury grant program.
The program grew out of a federal tax credit that covered up to 30% of the cost to build a renewable energy project. In February 2009, as part of the government’s stimulus package, the offer was updated so that project owners could receive the funds about two months after finishing construction.
In that form, the program helped funnel more than $1.3 billion into 1,170 solar projects across 42 states while supporting 211 wind-power efforts in 38 states with $15 billion, according to industry groups.

In my neck of the woods (eastern Kansas), coal power is cheaper than nuke power. I know because a few years ago, it was decided that I (on the coal plant) would get to help pay the higher rates of people on the nuke plant.
Coal is still king around here.
And all the “fossil” fuels were put here for us to use.
They will NOT run out on this earth.
The French make their operations more efficient with breeder reactors.
Does anyone else live in Southern California? Have you driven through any of those windy desert passes? Who was the moron that said wind and solar doesn't have any environmental impact? The visual blight caused by 5,000 whirling windmills totally ruins the view at some of these locations. Frankly, it looks far worse than a strip mine or clear-cutting of forests, and I can still recall environmentalists having conniptions and myocardial infarctions over THOSE.
480k per house not including up keep of the solar panels, sounds fantastic to me. Obama really got a good deal for the tax payer.
