The crash led Ms. Valencia, an illegal immigrant who did not have a valid driver’s license, to 12 days in detention and the start of deportation proceedings — after 17 years of living in Georgia.

I'm sure she has family in Mexico or wherever she came from.

“These are not horrific drivers,” Ms. Kosky said. “These are not D.U.I.’s. These are not people who are putting people in danger.”

I've lost count of how many articles I've read over the past 10 years where an illegal is involved in a traffic accident and then jumps our and runs away.

The NY Times once again whining about other states.

“She’s been here 17 years and hasn’t bothered to learn English yet?”

She’s a lazy criminal invader.

Ms. Valencia is a LOSER on many levels.

Eff her, the illegal scum like her, and the NYT. Deport them all.

Nobody wants to address who actually gets the bill for these accidents: the (legal) auto insurance consumers. Here in NJ they had for a short time a program where you received stickers for your license plate corners when you registered your car (I don’t know why they discontinued it). If your plate simply had a registration sticker on the lower left corner and an insurance sticker on your lower right, these accidents would dry up very quickly: you’d be giving a cop probable cause to stop any vehicle without them, and even if they won’t deport someone they could at least impound the vehicle. Living in NJ, there is no doubt in my mind that while the average American wants these illegals deported the government (both parties) want them to stay.

Here in northern NJ this is very common; they can go all the way to high school graduation in Spanish. All of our crosswalk signals have been changed from “Walk/Don’t Walk” to the international red hand and white figure walking. I guess it should, as there are fewer Americans here every year anyway.

“The driver produced what (later) turned out to be a fraudulent DL, fake insurance card, stolen plates, plus phony vehicle registration.”

Look at the accident a few years ago in California (major pile-up, with fire/fatalities, I believe in a tunnel). When the police responded there was more vehicles than drivers; multiple drivers had fled the scene...

In the NYC area it is getting increasingly difficult to get any job in retail without Spanish, due in large part to the government’s selling out our American dream. There is no doubt they are outrught stealing jobs from legal Americans. Thankfully as the economy sputtered I come home less and less to a neighborhood filled with illegal aliens doing yardwork for cash; when the illegals start leaving your area you know you have a full-blown Depression...

"...RE:“These are not horrific drivers,” Ms. Kosky said...."

Actually, they are. Every day in my town/county an illegal Mexican hurts or kills a person. They have an astronomical rate of hit and runs. In my experience they are a bigger risk than drunks. With their ignorant, 3rd world mentality, they oftentimes have no concept of the rules of the road or the desire to learn. That, coupled with their aggression and arrogance, is not a winning combo.

If their only vehicular crime was tossing dirty diapers out their window (which they do with regularity here) I could tolerate them. As it stands now, I will not ever tolerate them. They are a menace and a threat to public safety.

The population of my home town, Dalton, Ga., was 48% Hispanic in 2009. I'm hoping the poor economy will send a lot of them home. I see Hispanic surnames in the foreclosure listings, so, I guess those people have just walked away from their homes. Maybe they've walk away from the state.

I’d think the illegals couldn’t buy the homes; if they’re legit it’s a shame they lost their homes.

Banking on illegal immigrants is from 2005.

I don't think we'll ever be told how many illegals received loans, or the effect their sub-prime loans had on our economy. In some cases, like the illegals who did live next to me, they don't own the home, it's bought by someone here legally, and the rooms are rented to illegals. There would be three families living in homes zoned single family. When the economy went bad and the illegals lost their jobs, they moved out. The owner can know longer afford the high mortgage. It is unbelievable how banks gave loans to people who could not afford them. Even more unbelievable that our tax dollars bailed the banks out.

When I look at the documentation required to qualify for a mortgage (and my wife is a permanent resident alien), I can’t believe they knowingly lent to illegal aliens. As far as the illegal alien housing bubble bursting, that was really felt here in north Jersey. As property taxes climbed, and (American) family sizes dwindled, more and more people started adding basement apartments, converting one family homes to two family, etc. The towns didn’t seem fazed by it until a whole wave of Latino children showed up in school, requiring at a minimum more teachers, or even worse, “bi-lingual” departments and the related bureaucracy. At that point the towns started re-evaluations, which were thinly veiled attempts to find the illegal apartments; the goal was not to remove them, but to tax them. This worked well until many of the jobs the illegal aliens were working (for those that were working) followed the legitimate jobs out of Jersey to places south & west. Illegals started packing up & leaving, and now these homeowners are still paying higher property tax rates on homes with vacant space. Lots of “For Sale” signs here in NJ, and many for six months + with no buyers.
