This article will focus on Windows operating system and a freeware program called HostsMan. I will give an Apple OS X alternative called GasMask but I have not personally used that software.
( I am also including a way to block 156,000+ malicious and advertising servers in this tutorial, however you can skip
Windows Installation of HOSTS file management software.
1. Click to http://www.abelhadigital.com/hostsman and download the HostsMan Installer Version: 3.2.73 or a newer stable beta version.
2. Install Hostsman with default options AND TICK THE BOX ON THE "MAKE BACKUP OF HOSTS FILE ." Windows2000 to WindowsXP will have default directory of C:\Program Files\HostsMan , WIndows Vista and newer will have C:\Program Files (x86)\HostsMan
3. Run HostsMan. In the Menu Select Tools->Options .
(Note for Step 4 onward, if using Windows Vista , WIn7 or WinServer2008, you need to click on the UAC shield to allow HostsMan Administrator access at this point.)
On the left menu, click ->System. select the box "Automatically run on Windows Startup".
On the left menu, click ->Update . Select the box "Ask for Confirmation when new updates are available. Select Default Action as "Merge with Hosts file"
Click APPLY.
Click OK.
4. In the Menu Select Hosts->Manage Update Sources .
add the following sources for host file automated updates:

5. in Hostsman menu bar go to Tools-> HostsMan Editor

7. GO to Tools-> HOstsOptimizer . Make sure the Create Backup box IS ticked. Then click OPtimize Hosts button.
8. Congratulations, you are now boycotting the copyright trolls of RIGHTHAVEN media.
9. Users of Microsoft Windows 2000 and above, may want to disable
the Windows built in DNS service if experiencing a slowdown as
a result of using the HOSTS file for advert and malicious
site blocks. TO do this, go to ->Tools->Options->on left click ->System. Click the Disable Service Button.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC OS X:
1. Go to http://www.clockwise.ee/gasmask/
2. Download GasMask vresion 0.5 , download button is on top right of screen.
3. Install GasMask.
4. Run GasMask, (- Administrator password is required only on the first run of the application) and add a new local Hosts file.
5. Open a text editor.
6. Copy the block of text in step 7 in the Windows instructions above into the text editor.
7. Save the file as a text file, something like RIGHTHAVENBLOCKLISTdec052010.txt
8. Go back into GasmMask and add a local file, and point GasmMask to the file you just created above.
9. You should be good to go.
10. You can add the malicious blocklists mentioned in the Windows instruction 4 above as a remote hosts file, and can include a manual or automated updates of those files from those servers.
